It seems crazy, but i just can't get home-made bread to make any sense economically.

Strong wholemeal flour is around £1 per kilo, so a large loaf is around 70p. Add a bit for yeast, oil, electricity etc. Quite possibly 10 litres of water to wash up, so that's another 10p that goes unnoticed.

If I dare to add anything to the loaf, the cost goes through the roof - few herbs, sun dried tomatoes, olives, tomato paste etc., and I'm easily looking at a £2/£3 loaf.

Expensive business making your own bread!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Ive worked it out and get figures much cheaper than this! They are at home. I worked out how many loaves per bag of flour and the cost of a tbsp of Skimmed milk etc. Agreed "special" breads would be more expensive than shop bought but for me for everyday bread, it is far cheaper than shop bought. I can put the prices up I worked out later on.

  • i think i worked out before that it costs me about 30p to make 6 rolls (which i make at least every other day) but to me its not just the cost, its also knowing exactly what goes into my bread, and you cant beat a kitchen that smells of fresh bread either!:D
    totally a tog!:D
  • oh and the 30p included seeds, rosemary and olives, it would of course be a bit cheaper without these:D
    totally a tog!:D

I love my home made bread, its not about cost being cheaper for me never even worked it out, its about me knowing what I put into the bread and I love the smell.

Though I say so myself, any bread I make at home is a million times healthier and tastier than even premium shop-bought bread.
In my opinion shop-bought bread should be viewed as junk food: it contains heaps of salt, sugar and additives.

Completely agree! Read the labels on shop bread and compare to what you put in a loaf. I wouldnt touch shop bought now - unless very rare or given at someones house. No way on earth would i buy it.

Well of course adding those things to bread will make it expensive:rolleyes:

I make my own as found when buying a full size loaf, I ended up throwing up to half a loaf away a week (I live on my own and have a miniature freezer!) The smaller loaves you can buy are a rip off, so i'd rather make my own smaller loaf and know it won't be wasted.

Plus as most of the previous posts say, it tastes so much better.
