Sometimes it makes little sense financially to work.

Take my parents they receive over £580 a week in welfare payments. And that doesn't include no council tax to pay!!

If my dad was able to work, there is no job he could do that would give him a monthly net salary, after all expenses of getting to and from work have been accounted for etc, of £2650.

And that is why there should be benefit cuts.
    You've just shown that.

On £25k they'd get a little CTC, possibly LHA/HB, but unlikely to get CTB (that's all changing in April anyway).

    You've just shown that.

So you think that a pensioner couple should have to live on less than £217.90 a week? You also think that the 'qualified' disabled(by virtue of the higher rates of DLA/AA) shouldn't have some level of premium to compensate for those disabilities? You also think that carers that claim a means tested benefit shouldn't be paid £32.60 a week for at least 35 hours a week caring?

Which one would you cut? Their minimum pension income, would you tell them that being disabled has no effect on the household income or maybe people should care for others for nothing?

Or Why not make DLA & AA count for means tested benefits then?

You are all heart and more than likely a Tory!

Perhaps this part of the thread could be taken over to Discussion Time, as it is irrelevant to the OP's question.

As you said, your parents do not receive less than £217.90 - they receive...

This is what is so wrong!

Yes, I believe all benefits should be means tested. Why shouldn't they?

Heaven forbid that any member of my family ever need to be 'cared for' but I would do it without question.
I certainly would not expect to be paid for doing so.

    And yes, I vote Conservative.

£580... so that's... £260 each per week each. I'm a lib dem voter...well, would have been had I made it to the polling booth but never mind. The deficit has to be brought down somewhere and considering current food and energy prices this could quite frankly be halved. Does this weekly amount include HB? I'm not sure what they receive for what benefit however but they are living as a couple I assume?

Heating bills are effectively half when two people are involved rather than one person. (per sqft heated). >.> The deficit has to be cut somewhere. That said as long as they are spending it wisely. I'm not particularly fussed with OAP benefits as they stand. Though I'd like to see more help for vulnerable people with regards to energy costs. >.> but £30 a week is more than enough to put on fuel.
Be Warned: Any decision made by ATOS should be treated with the contempt and suspicion in rightly deserves. If in any doubt, make sure to appeal any and all decisions by ATOS. Do not take their word for it, do not give them an inch of trust.

When judging if ATOS were fit for work, it looks like they self-assessed. //Rant-Disclaimer End.

That figure of just over £580 relates to a means tested benefit where both are disabled, one gets Attendance Allowance and the other DLA. As a couple they care for each other's inabilities. No that figure does not include any HB or CTB. If they still had a mortgage they wouldn't get HB obviously, but would get up to £70 a week as well towards the mortgage.

Additionally they get the Cold weather payments of £25 every time the temperature drops as well as the Winter Fuel Allowance of £200 + £10 each as a Christmas present from the government.

Whether the system is right or wrong is not my concern. As a means tested benefit the government have stipulated that that level of income is what they need.

Mind you, they can save over £150 a week out of that money for one off special treats for themselves and the family.

A similar family that I know of with similar income, spend the winter in either Spain or Malta as they can't stand the cold!

Carer's cannot live on fresh air.

It can be possible to juggle, but if a person requires constant care and you are the only carer, how will you support yourself?

The Government pays carer's allowance because they know the alternative is much more costly.

I am losing patience with you winding people up with how your pensioner parents care for each other and receive over £580 a week and that doesn't include no council tax to pay(two exclamation marks)!!
