Small business web hosting

Hi moneysavers,
My boss is looking to switch hosting provider soon as the company that originally setup the hosting is putting up it's prices again. They now want over £5 a month for renewing basic website hosting which is too much for my boss.

My boss does not have a clue, so has given me the responsibility to switch hosting providers. Having done a few searches there are many cheaper options. Can anyone recommend a cheap package as the site is basic, about 30 pages. Nothing advanced required.

Godaddy have deals on at the moment - £1.99 per month for their basic package (which is still more advanced than you need).
  • Watch out, the cheaper you go the more problematic the service (generally). Godaddy being about the biggest are also (in my opinion) one of the worst to do business with. You can get decent hosting for a really cheap price if you pay for the whole year in advance which is usually the best option.

emonsterhost might be worth a look. I use them all the time, though I have advanced requirements. The service is pretty steady.

    Try Layer 7.

Stay away from godaddy/namecheap etc for webhosting.

http://www.eshophosts.co.uk/ for me, they set up everything and are very good customer service. They have given me advice on SEO amongst other things all for the price. You could go on the cheapest option of £2.99/month.

They also set my shop for free for me.

Does your boss have access to the FTP etc to be able to move things? I assume the company that "set it up" is the web design company? Do you actually own the website as by default it remains their property even though you paid them to create it?

There are many reasonable hosts. It would make sense to check your requirements in terms of PHP, ASP.Net, JSP etc as some of the hosts suggested by others don't support all of these and to redevelop a site to match a host is crazy.

Have used CSNewMedia for many years with very few complaints and those have all been dealt with quickly even if it was user error but still, define requirements first and choose a vendor that matches them
