new water meter bill

  • I was asked how much water was wasted during the cistern leak - not enough to make much difference to the proper bill!

There was a double number entered in the first huge reading which more or less multiplied the charges by 10.

I thought people might be interested to know the following:
a water meter usually has a small wheel that turns to show there is a leak even if there is not enough flow to turn the dials.
I got a note from Thames Water to say I had a leak; they sent an inspector who decided it was between the main in the street and the stopcock just outside my house; he can effectively make you fix it and I got it done
Thames Water, however, pays £215 towards the work and will recalculate the bill for past losses based on a further meter reading two weeks after it is fixed. I am waiting for my cheque.

    Welcome to the forum.

Most water companies have a 'goodwill' one time payment for leaks.

I am not clear how they estimate for 'past losses' if the leak is not enough to turn the dials. In fact I have never heard of a leak(after the meter) that isn't enough to turn dials.

the small wheel you mention is in the middle of the meter, if that is moving then it is recording usage on the meter simple as that
