We tried to look up his Gas Safe number on the Gas Safe website but it says he is not registered. We have is address and company details but not sure if I want the hassle of pursuing him for the cost of the new PCB, plus we can't prove if it was him, or coincidence that the boiler broke.

make sure you put his number into the right place on the gas safe web site, there are two options, check an installer & check a business both these numbers will be different, it could just be you are putting in the wrong box
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Sorry but thats why there are so many cowboys out there, and they rely on no one doing anything about them because they dont want to get involved!

All you have to do is report him, if you dont want retribution thats up to you, but IMO I couldnt have a fine conscience knowing he was at large to do the same or worse to anyone, no matter what the circumstances!

ACTUALLY NO I AM NOT SORRY!
If I go ahead and report him, where would I report him to and what do I report him for?
I was the one who told him to leave and take him thermostat with him as I had lost faith in him and didn't want him back near my boiler.
I have no proof that he broke it, though to me it's pretty obvious and highly unlikely to have been a coincidence.

It has now been snowing here for the past 24hours and my priority is getting my boiler working again and getting some heat in here, sorry if I have came across badly to anyone.
I was thinking of going to citizens advice to ask for more info on how to deal with the situation.

Check a gas engineer = Engineer cannot be found. Please ensure you are entering their licence card number which is a 7 digit number.

Check a gas business = Business is not currently registered.

I did not ask to see his license card, in hindsight very stupid.

Do I have any comeback if he is not registered?

the check an engineer box is where you would put his card no this changes every year, the check a business is where you put his business reg no this doesn't change, you said in your OP that you got a heating engineer where did you get him from ? are you sure that you wrote his no down correctly ? do you know his name & or address.

If you would like to pm me with all the details you have for him i will have a look for you & let you know if i find anything, if he isn't reg then i will let you know then it will be upto you to report him to gas safe.

although fitting a room stat in alot of boilers doesn't req you to be GSR as you may not have to access the combustion side, fitting a new pcb certainly does as there are certain checks that must then be carried out

    Hi Guys,

Just an update, went on the advice from CAB and wrote a letter to him asking him to reimburse us for the £200+ we had to pay Vokera to supply and fit the new PCB. According to Post Office, this letter was signed for and accepted this week so we await a reply.
Gas Safe has also inspected the boiler and passed a report to HSE on the work as he was not qualified at the time to carry it out.

We are now quite a bit further out of pocket than the £200 as the inspection by Gas Safe revealed the previous owners of the house had hidden many things which were not picked up on home report. The flue was not connected and the gap was hidden beneath mis-shapen tubing and duct tape. Looks like the boiler was not fitted by a correctly qualified person. More investigating revealed cardboard stuffed around the flue for support and a very squinty flue. Have had to pay out for a roofer, new tiles, new flue and associated parts and brackets.

But all sorted now and have a working safe boiler.

Just a bit of an empty bank account is my only problem now.

So, perversely, this guy might have done you a favour by inadvertently revealing a bodged and unsafe install?

    Yes, exactly that. How ironic.
He might just have saved me from dying of carbon monoxide poisoning, but IMO he still owes me £200+.
He shouldn't have been working in that period on gas systems, because he was still awaiting the outcome of his exams.
If he had been a decent professional workman, he might have pointed out the things gas safe noticed, the duct tape, dodgy flue etc?
Fair doo's, I didn't ask him to check anything, just to fit a themrostat but after the inspection by gas safe, the next guy we got out to fix the issues, noticed ALL these things, so why didn't he?
Any way I'm trying not to be nasty about him so I'll shut up now.

P.S. If I ever go to Oz and meet the people who used to own this house, I will not be responsible for my actions. This is turning into the house from hell. No wonder they emigrated to the other side of the world.
