late payment trick?

  • If you do it online, payment gets credited on the day you made the request, but ... don't know whether you have to do it by a certain time on the day ( though I made a payment on a bank holiday and it was credited to the account on the Bank holiday when I looked a few days later ( you won't see the credit until payment has been taken from the account that's being debited, but once the money's been taken the credit is backdated). Secondly, and more importantly, In order to set up the online service, I think you need to receive an access code from Halifax, and this gets sent through the post, or at least it used to,

If they've already charged the late fee, and you phone up to offer debit card payment, it's often possible to talk them out of the late fee at the same time. However, it's difficult to persuade them to refund the late fee if you aren't offering to pay the arrears there and then.

I would recommend against late online payments - because computers are harder to negotiate with.

I have a Sainsbury's Bank 12-month 0% cashback card which I - whoops - missed a payment on. They stopped the cashback, and cut the limit to a stingy £700, thereby rendering the card practically useless for new purchases - but it's still on 0%. They charged a £25 late fee but I talked them out of it.
    :p
  • Your wife should definitely try and get them to waive the charge. I was late with my first payment to Co-Op credit card, and I rang them straight away. I apologised profusely, promised it wouldn't happen again and although they didn't cancel it completely they did reduce it by half to £12.50 instead of £25. You can't lose out by trying and you might gain! Also worth setting up a direct debit for the minimum payment to make sure you never miss a payment and thus avoid any late payment charges again. Then you can always send them extra payments by cheque to pay off more of the balance.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I pay on the nail every month so if, for some reason or other, the payment is late then the cc company are usually understanding and waive any fee that would be incurred otherwise.
