Unwanted extras on a new car

  • There are a few reasons why you can still get GAP insurance if you are paying cash for your car.

1/ You may be paying cash to the garage, but that cash could have come from a loan elsewhere.

2/ You can get a GAP policy to cover the difference between the write off value of your car and the amount needed to buy a replacement vehicle in the same condition and mileage as when you made your original purchase.

If your car gets written off in the first year of you owing it and it is a model with high depreciation, you may end up with a fair shortfall between what the insurance pays out and what is needed to buy a replacement.

I used to work as a Sales Manager at a Ford dealership. It sound like they did sneak them into the invoice. You do have 14 days to cancel the Gap and tyre insurance but not the paint protection.

In your paperwork you should find a statement of demands and needs and some information of the insurance polices. You should suggest to the dealer that you are going to contact the FSA about mis-selling as this is almost certainly a case of mis-selling. You should be aware of all insurance products. Even if they claim they have given the products to you free of charge you will still be able to cancel the insurance with the insurance provider and get a full refund. Do not delay get hold of your policy and give the insurer a call as soon as possible.

Even if you have not had this paper work you are protected as the rules state that you can cancel up until 14 days after you receive the paper work but speed is of the essence.

Thanks, but why do you say that I cannot cancel the paint protection? This is something that wasn't pointed out to me either. It is being sold (or should be !) as an insurance type product where chips are repaired etc. 'm going to push for a refund on that too, I think they'll do it.
