I've got AVG on my old pc. I also run Spybot & Adaware. Have been told that I need a firewall & tried Comodo but it doesn't work with ME.
Can anyone help with suggestions for a firewall? Free is better but don't mind paying a bit if it's good. Still on dial up though so long downloads are a problem.
Also does anyone else have problems with Spybot? It goes a bit funny sometimes & windows-style warning boxes in german/dutch(?) appear that i have to click on loads of times to get rid of!!
Thanks

Is it firewall night tonight?
Do you have a router?
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=448543Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I changed my WinME machine to Avast some time ago as AVG was downloading enormous update files every day (they dropped support for ME and I'm sure Win2K as well).
Zonealarm works fine with ME (and everything else so far - no Vista yet..).0 -
No i don't have a router. (may get one in future though when i get new cheap lappy set up properly - still have to work out the security for it when the free trial stuff stops!)0

Go there; http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html
Download version; 6.1.774.10 -
I have Zonealarm set up on a couple of PCs running ME, and one annoying feature I had to turn off was the Auto Update. It tells me I need to update, downloads V6.5, but then stops at install and says V6.5 will not run on ME.
Quote from their website;
Operating System ZoneAlarm End-of-Life Status
Windows 98se/ME Support Discontinued
On July 11, 2006, Microsoft will end support for Windows 98, 98SE and Me, which will have the resulting effect of making these operating systems less secure (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx). Windows 98/Me are older operating systems, and therefore inherently more vulnerable to attacks than newer operating systems. Now that Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to this operating system it will become increasingly prone to security vulnerabilities.
Accordingly, Check Point will cease to support Windows 98/98SE/Me with the introduction of our version 6.5 ZoneAlarm family of products including ZoneAlarm® Internet Security Suite, ZoneAlarm® Pro, ZoneAlarm® Antivirus, ZoneAlarm® Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm®.
Note about pre-6.5 products:
Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating system. However, there are a few new and advanced protection features in ZoneAlarm products that will not run due to technical limitations of this operating system. ZoneAlarm strongly recommends upgrading to a supported and current version of the Windows operating system.
ZoneAlarm may end services to pre-6.5 products at any time.
I still run the older version.0 -
Thanks for the replies everyone. Ok .... so ZoneAalarm seems to be the recommeded firewall for Windows ME?
I'm a bit worried about all the new stuff on the newer version:Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating system.

Are these things important? Can i get them elsewhere?0 -
Just switch off the auto update. You are running an old unsupported OS so, you don't need the latest updates for ZA:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
