"16 Kids and Counting" - how do they afford it?

I thought this thread was about the father who owns and runs a bakery? So he's contributing into the system, and IMO we have no right in his private life if they are supporting themselves to a large degree.
I agree, this family appear to be as self sufficient as most and they are showing a good work ethich to their kids.I agree with you in cases where the parents have lots of kids but never work nor intend to, and bring up the poor kids with the same outlook, but how do you limit their child bearing?
The only way is to reduce payouts so they aren't breeding for financial gain.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I wouldn't, I would just pay for let's say the first three kids child benefit for all, then if you wanted more you would have to pay yourself or work I'm afraid!0

I agree. I can see how it might be possible for a few light meals, i.e baked potatoes and fillings, soup and filled rolls but now how you can make filling, balanced, nutritious, tasty family meals for under 50p a head consistently. £5 for a meal for 4 of us is good value here and I can't do that every meal ( although OH eats enough for 2 people)0 -

I don't believe they are self sufficient. They are getting tax credits without a doubt."fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell)0 -

I feel very uncomfortable about where this policy would take us ultimately.
Increased child poverty?
Compulsory contraception?
Forced abortion?0 -

I agree with you in principle, but then what would happen to the poor kids who are born after number 3 because the parents simply don't care/refuse to stop breeding even though they can't afford it? All the children of that family would be affected by the loss of benefits. It's not the kids' fault they have irresponsible idiots for parents.0 -

If you are going to have a big family and pay for it YOURSELF, then good luck to you. However, having this many children and not contributing is irresponsible and selfish IMHO. I can understand if you have been put into this situation by being made jobless, but for g*ds sake stop having kids at this point!!!
I don't feel uneasy about CB going to families like this, who know how to budget, who work and who pay into the system - and from the way that the children are being brought up, they will pay into the system.
However it then means that I'm objecting to paying CB to the "f-e-c-k-less families" who don't do any of these things, who think that bringing up their family means buying them everything knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.
I do think that government should be giving notice that with effect from - say 2020 - future child benefit will be restricted to families of 3 or under - but that families who currently have more than 3 children will continue to receive CB - but no increases for more than 3.0 -
Yep, I think that's a good way to go!0
