Are there penalties for non notification of contract expiry ?

My Avanti (was Shell) contract was taken out 6 years ago and on looking at it, notice it was for a 5 year period.

Looking at some of the posts here and the OFT website, I see that suppliers are meant to notify of the right to change suppliers when the contract expires.

Am I right in that and does anyone know if there any penalties for non notification ?

I am about to undertake a search for suppliers for TN15 and will post the ppl results - we have an annual spend of circa £6,000 so looking for some keener rates than Avanti, albeit to be fair they filled the tank in 2 working days after I let it run out.

Does anyone know if they will sharpen their pencils if I threaten to leave ?

Thanks
