Is it worth uninstalling the drive in device manager and then letting Windows "discover" it again?

Have you ever burnt CDs on this drive before?
Under one of the menus in device manager, there an option for scan for new hardware.
This will check for anything Windows doens't know aboout and install the relevant drivers.

Sounds like a hardware failure-the drive can read but no longer write? You could try a CD lens cleaner, but if not, and it's a desktop, a replacement CD/DVD drive is very cheap (well under £20) , and takes no more than 30 minutes to change yourself.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
