As per title

I know that up until last year plusnet offered a free basic email service after you switched away from them - I know this I have such a downgraded account myself at a second property I own

I am currently in the process of switching away from them to talktalk & have been told by one of their reps via their online support that ....

... We are unable to offer this option to retain any component of your account as a mail only account after recent changes in regulatory policy....

However their on terms state they offer a £20 a year service i.e.
http://www.plus.net/support/service/policies/cancellation.shtml#generalPolicies

So is the rep just badly trained & doesnt know what hes talking about ?

Anybody shed any light on this ?

I have a feeling that to keep the Plusnet email the broadband account was downgraded to a free "dial up" account, which obviously would never be used.
Have they now stopped offering dial up accounts?

Why worry, just switch to Gmail and you'll be ISP-independent forever.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Many sites require an ISP specific email address to register, I suppose to cut down on spamming.

It looks like I got a badly trained monkey grinder

when I phoned the cancellations department today they immediately scheduled a downgrade to a free email account without blinking an eye

My main email address has been a Gmail address for several years, and I am yet to be blocked on registering on a website.

No, many sites don't like hotmail/yahoo accounts as they are the archetypal throwaway spamming accounts.
