Haggling and new boiler

Finally sucummed and am getting new bolier.

Have had three quotes, all about the same (1500). Question is...how can I haggle? They are all charging VAT? Do I ask them to match another quote? Is it even possible?

Personally I'd try asking if they could do anything for cash and if that doesn't work say that I only have £x available to spend & the job is theirs if they can do it for that, but I then have no shame;)

Spending that sort of money and having a big job done i'd never do a cash deal.

When you do a cash deal to skip the VAT you should find that they won't give you a receipt. The upside of that is that if anything goes wrong with the work you have no receipt and no recourse.

Funnily enough, i've got two plumbers in the house right now fitting a new boiler for me. I wish it was only going to be £1500! Mind you, they are doing quite a lot of other work.

Should all be about £2200...ouch. Another plumber, unbelieveably, quoted me £3900 for pretty much the same work.

My usual approach is to tell each that I really like their boiler but my budget is such that sadly I'm going to have to go with so-and-so's cheaper quote of £xxxx... unless of course...?

First thing which you havent mentioned are they all corgi registered? and have you checked their registration details on the corgi website? Unfortunately plumbers are in such demand they do seem to charge loads for their jobs and considering they will do the job in only a day or two you realise your in the wrong JOB!
    ummm...
