Just took the plung and had a water meter installed as we pay £460 per year with Severn Trent.

Bought bottled water from Tesco 17p this will be used for the kettle.

Not flushing the toilet so often

There is only two of us, mainly we will use showers instead of the bath and hopefully the washing machine will be used twice weekly.

Anyone got any other tips.

Thanks,

Garcon6

Do you think Severn Trent charge 17p or more per litre?

The cost of a litre of water(including sewerage) from Severn Trent is 0.244pence. i.e. 4 litres for just under one penny.

We have been on a water meter for over a year now, our bills have dropped slightly, 3 adults in the house, our supplier is Southern Water
But i do expect to be paying more in the next few years because once everybody is metered and trying to save water the thieving water companys will increase their prices to maintain profits

    Stop buying water from tesco.
Unless you are doing something obviously wasteful, don't be too concerned about what you use.

Why? Metered water is from exactly the same supply as your unmetered water was!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

won't bother buying anymore bottled water and as there is only 2 of us we are not wasteful with water. I also agree that once everyone is on water meters the price will incease.
  • I would very much doubt you'd regret it. Wife & I went metered 5 years ago & annual bill went from £400 ish to £150! Like you, only 2 of us in the house, shower every day, at least the wife does. ;~}

Also we don't buy bottled water & don't worry about our usage as we naturally tend not to be wasteful either. The main drain (pardon the pun) on water usage tends to be power showers & hosepipe usage, just keep that under control & you should save quite a lot.
Today, there are 3 kinds of people : the have's, the have- not's and the have-not-paid-for-what-they-have's

That wouldn't work in Severn Trent Water region.

The cost just to supply water is £27.38 plus £12.88 plus a drainage charge of either £29.70 or £59.52 or £89.21.

The minimum bill would assuming they had a semi detached property then be £99.68 a year plus £2.444 a cubic metre (1,000 litres). Most people use around 150 litres a day but let's say that they are frugal with the water and use 100 litres per day....73 cubic metres per year. That's £178.41 a year totalling £278 a year.

To get a bill of £150 a year they would have to live in a flat and use 45 litres per person per day. It may be possible but very hard. My shower is quite good and saves quite a lot of water only using 5 litres per minute averaged over winter (4 litres/min) and summer (6 litres/min). That would be only be enough for about 5 minutes in the shower, a couple of toilet flushes, washing dishes every few days and washing one load of clothes once a week.

    .

Not all people have to pay that Surface Water Drainage(SWD) charge and can have it waived.

Nearly all properties built in the last 25 years will have surface water(from gutters etc) going into a soakaway and thus not pay. You should note that the 'default' position is to charge for SWD - even in flats.

Relief from that charge can also be claimed with all other water companies.

OK adding £29.70 from SWD to usage will get each of them an extra 12 cubic metres a year at a total of 60 litres a day...my point was that using much under 100 litres a day is quite difficult....unless the occupiers are rarely in the property so a £150 annual bill is very low even for just one person to achieve.
