Mine used to walk further than that.. 45 minute school run in snow and peeing rain is absolutely not fun!!!!! Especially when you already walked there and are sopping wet and freezing cold already.

2 of my girls couldn't walk that far, they barely manage the 15 minute walk home as it is.

I know when I was that age I walked EVERYWHERE; to school, to all my friends' houses etc (I'm only 25, so not too long ago either). I would've been walking much further than that on a daily basis, and didn't bat an eyelid. It wouldn't have occurred to me to get a bus/lift.

We live a mile and a half from school and we don't drive so we walk. I have said that my children can all have a friend round next week and have been organising it all, after speaking to the parents it turns out that 2/4 of the children 'can't possibly walk that far, can't you get the bus?'

The bus doesn't come until 25 minutes after school finishes and it would cost £11.70. Is a mile and a half really that far? Am I wrong for assuming they could walk home with us? My boys are 5,7,9 and 11. These children are 7 and 9.

My 28 month old daughter regularly walks 1-1.5 miles.

These other children sound like lazy b@stards.

My 3yo will walk to the shop and back, so about 2 miles? Not quick mind, but we get there.

My daughter aged 9 couldn't but she has disabilities which I don't think all her friends parents would be aware of as they are not obvious.

However if the little darlings don't have a physical impairment then there is no reason they couldn't walk that far.

    Yes definitely!

We have been without a car & have done a lot more walking than usual lately. We have walked to & from Brownies, a round trip of around 6 miles the last couple of weeks.

Even with the car, we sometimes walk to & from our nearest town which is 2 miles away, so a round trip of 4 miles. Our 2 children are 7 & 9 but we have walked with them since they were very young. Sounds like these particular parents may be the types that would think nothing of driving to their local corner shop unless there is any disability issues.

Perfectly acceptable. What would parents do who think it is too far when the Department of Education guidance I believe says that a primary school place for children of this age can be up to a 2 mile walk away and that that is deemed an acceptable distance to have to get to school?

We are definitely in the minority here, hardly anyone walks to school - even people who live on the school road! One of the parents offered to pick their child up from school and drop them off at mine but they will have to wait for us to get home :rotfl:
