Can your children walk 1 1/2 miles?

We live a mile and a half from school and we don't drive so we walk. I have said that my children can all have a friend round next week and have been organising it all, after speaking to the parents it turns out that 2/4 of the children 'can't possibly walk that far, can't you get the bus?'

The bus doesn't come until 25 minutes after school finishes and it would cost £11.70. Is a mile and a half really that far? Am I wrong for assuming they could walk home with us? My boys are 5,7,9 and 11. These children are 7 and 9.

Unless they have disabilities then I'd say they are just lazy kids with really lazy and slightly mad parents.

Walking with friends, when it is not cold is fun. How long does it take you? Could you stop to get a little cheap treat on the way to get them actually excited about it? I do find it very sad that some parents would actually stop their kids go to a friend because of having to walk, especially as I don't believe it is the child who has an issue with it but the parent, but some are lazy themselves so can't imagine their child do something they wouldn't themselves want to do.

Yes, I'd expect them to be able to walk that far at that age (earlier in fact), even after being at school all week.

It only takes around 35 minutes, we normally stop and have a nose through the toy shop window because they change their displays all the time. We walk everywhere so I suppose it's just normal to us.

Mine walk 2.5 miles most days and I don't do slow.

The youngest walker is 8 and very capable. Some days we walk home too so that's a 5 mile round trip.

I used to walk that far just to get to my best mates, as did my 5 year old sister and wee bro who was not yet 3 years old. they lived near school so often did it 7 days a week, often both ways.

Yes-agree with above posters. Sounds like laziness of the parents. We used to walk everywhere when I was a child. My children have walked miles with me from when they were very small. 1 1/2 miles is no distance at all unless you have a medical reason for not being able to.
