i wish greyhounds were prevented from being used as just a racedog breed to make money, they are loving careing affectionate animals, when brought up as a family pet and not an object to run for a fake bunny round a track and thus when retired all it wants to do is chase cats other dogs and are generally not really safe for the family enviroment.

    .

The part I've highlighted isn't actually true. I volunteer for a local Greyhound Rescue and know of many ex racing hounds who live quite happily alongside cats, rabbits and other small furry animals. Some don't, many do. It's this type of misconception we work hard to correct, so as to enable many more of these beautiful creatures to have a long and happy retirement. You are though, absolutely right in saying they are loving, caring affectionate creatures who deserve better

Problem happens when the 'some' end up with owners who have been seduced by the mantra, 'oh they are lovely all they want to do is curl up by the fire'.

Having your cat killed by a greyhound is the most unpleasant experience ever and I would not wish it on any greyhound owner as it must have been awful for them too.

The answer lies in banning greyhound racing. But until that happens what do we do with the retired dogs? Rehoming is not always the answer. However neither is shooting. More effort should be put into targetting the root cause of the problem ie get behind efforts to ban greyhound racing.

My father was an RSPCA inspector, why does anyone think that pumping an animal full of nasty chemicals is more humane than a single bolt to the head that kills instantaneously? I'm not justifying that they should be killed but a bolt gun is used in slaughterhouses and I would rather be killed that way than chemicals anyday , you lot could do with checking your bandwagons are roadworthy before you jump on them because you clearly haven't got a scooby doo about this one

A bolt gun is used in slaughterhouses to stun the animal before slaughter.

The point is that the bolt gun doesn't kill instantly and can be used by anyone who happens to own a greyhound:

Under existing UK legislation, any person can use a bolt gun to destroy a greyhound, if they are the legal owner.
Attempted destruction of greyhounds by bolt has resulted in innocent dogs being left to suffer in agony for hours, before being found and taken to a veterinary surgery to be finally put to sleep by lethal injection.

I don't see the relevance of what your father did for a living to be honest and as for "pumping an animal full of nasty chemicals", if you'd seen an animal put to sleep humanely, you wouldn't be ranting with your uninformed argument and insulting people who are obviously better informed than you.

I've got cats and hounds living together and I agree, caution is needed, however any breed of dog is capable of killing other animals, so it's not an issue exclusive to retired Greyhounds. It is a misunderstanding that can prevent many potentially excellent homes from even investigating the breed as a possibility though, so that's why I highlighted the OP
The Rescue I volunteer for is an independent charity, who fully assess both dogs and potential owners and provide ongoing support and advice for the lifetime of the dog, but I agree, not all of them are as thorough as they should be.

The prey drive in greyhounds is intense and was long before greyhound racing became a so called "sport" in the 1920s and many charities can and do test for cat safeness etc. when rehoming, outside all sighthounds including greyhounds should be on a lead as they generaly have poor recall and it's not as if you are going to catch one once it's bolted.

A greyhound dog's skull is too thick for a bolt gun designed to stun farm animals to be effective, follow your own advice and do some research. Also just because your father was an inspector with a charity doen't make you an expert so the fact you used that as an appeal to authorty on a subject is pretty sad TBH.
