Wow. I cant believe you had to post them your driving licence, if any cc company asked me to do that Id cancel the thing, Ive never heard of that before. I would never send them that - for the very reason because of what has happened to you - what if they lose it or dont send it back and you need it?

I had a Tesco cc, when they sent it to me they had misspelt my name. I called them and said youve spelt my name wrong - as when you receive the card it says check the details and if they are wrong let them know. They said I had to write a letter to them telling them what my name was. I said I did that on the application form! Idiots.

I only used it for the 0% thing and to get some clubcard points and then I cancelled it. Then about a year later they sent me a statement! Just weird.

Tesco didnt ask him to do that....the OP took it upon himself to post the original document rather than simply get a copy countersigned after obtaining a license with the correct address on it....

Unfortunately, his license is now missing and he'll have to buy a replacement for £25 - when a change of address would have been free...

I had a similar situation with Barnsley Building Society. Sent documents as per their list to verify identity, but they refused to accept a letter from Barclay's Stockbrokers quoting my account number, name, and address constituted "a letter from a bank".
I called them and they agreed they were being stupid and to resubmit it. Sent it back with a covering letter, and they rejected it again, with the same standard covering letter.

    Opened the ISA elsewhere instead.

  • Hi Guys, I really appreciate all your comments.

The address on the DL was changed to my current address where I live a few months ago. Then I sent the original DL to Tesco with the current address. Even after that, they refuse to allow me access to my account. That is when I felt that they are absolutely taking the mickey....and only then, I started complaining. I must point out that I was forced to post the original DL as I had no other option- I could not get the ID copy certified for free anywhere.

Also, I must mention that I did try to do a balance transfer from the Tesco CC to a different card to sever all ties with this menacing bank and even that was disallowed. They have blocked my Tesco CC! Why they would do that is beyond me as for all intents and purposes, it is a payment to Tesco isn't it?!

Is there no justice for honest hard working individuals?

I am considering taking legal actions against them now and take them to small claims court as this has become personal. I have wasted way too much time and money on this.

I have just posted on something tangentially aligned to your problem.

You case causes me to suspect that you too are suffering from this lack of human interface syndrome
The bankers stole my pension (and everyone else's). It should have earned a lot of money, but they took their bonus pot first.

From the original account, it seems like there has been something of a perfect storm of Tesco's being unduly careful and bureaucratic, and the OP being unaware of the Ts & Cs, and the generally accepted rules for proof of ID.

Given that Tesco probably has more commercial premises in the UK than any other organisation, I would not have accepted that ID could not be verified at a store by the Manager (perhaps having made an appointment to see him/her).

I would, by now, be speaking to someone high up in Tesco to get this sorted out. It seems like the account is frozen because the ID is still in question.

    Which begs the question:-

Why did they issue a card (and allow it to be used), if they weren't sure of the OPs identity

It sounds like they did (additional) checks when the high value transaction appeared.
  • So, they gave him a Credit limit of £3,500, then had a paddy when he used it

Thing is, what is the point of doing any further checks once the money has been used already? The matter is done and dusted. My experience with other banks is that, they called me up and asked me if I made the transaction (if they had any suspicions) and if I confirmed I did make them, that would be the end of the matter then and there.

Even though I did not agree with their "further" checks, I did everything in my power to satisfy them of my address and identity. Can they not use some human judgement and discretion in the matter?! Why would an identity thief keep making payments to a credit card account and co-operate with the bank to provide documents. Is the identity thief THAT good, that he managed to get replacement IDs within matter of days (by supplying paper version of the Driving Licence)? I just do not understand!

And leaving all that aside, why would they not accept my ORIGINAL DL which they acknowledged they received with my current address and everything? Why are they saying it is not 'certified'? What is there to certify? ITS AN ORIGINAL!!
