Bike stolen, not in garage. Insurance void??

Hiya,

ive just had my Honda Vision stolen from a neighbours garden. It was locked up and hidden out of sight at the time. I have Third party Fire & Theft with Aviva, I stated on my initial application the bike would be kept in a locked garage, which it was.

But, the engine on the bike went kaput the other day and I ended up moving it to neighbours back garden until I could repaired.

Now the bikes been stolen, will my insurance be void?? Ive reported it to the police by the way

No. The question is something like "where is the vehicle usually parked?" So you are still covered if its parked somewhere else.

It would be very harsh to void your insurance just for that. The worst that will happen is they with charge you any extra due if you'd parked it in your neighbours garden all along and then pay out the claim.

I work in insurance and I've seen this type of scenario time and time again.

Why would it be in the neighbours garden and not the garage?

OP have you even got a garage or was that to keep costs down?

It would depend on what the policy says, many exclude theft when the bike is at home or within a defined vicinity during certain hours (Typically night time).

If it has an exclusion / warranty to this effect the Insurers would be within their rights to decline the claim and normally would as the theft probably would not have occurred if it was in a locked building.

My old bike policy excluded theft between 10pm and 6am or something like that..
Unless locked in the garage or a garage? wording?

You may work in insurance, but it seems not bike insurance!

The correct advice is to check the policy wording - see #4.

I'd moved it there a couple of days earlier becuase my mate was going to try and have a look at it before I paid for it to be picked up by a repair service

I'm no loss adjuster, but you would be dubious about the bike going missing when expensive (probably beyond economical repair ) is due.

It will normally trigger extra investigations and a possible reduction in payout due to the bike being worth less assuming it's covered.

Scrimper do not be tempted to lie as the Insurers are very good at discovering lies which in effect is fraud. If you lie about a claim and are discovered, the entire claim will be declined and your policy cancelled. You will then find it very difficult finding any competitively priced insurance for bike, car or home etc forever more.

What's the actual value of the bike pre theft eg taking into account it needed work done?

Have you read your cover to see if it stupulates the bike is only covered when at home during nightime hours if it's in a locked building?

So its been there days.. Why couldnt your mate look at it in your garage?

Insurers pickup on little snippets like that and they will investigate.
