Fraudulent transactions on my bank account

Hi All

Just some advice please if possible. This morning when I logged on to internet banking I noticed 3 fraudulent transactions on my account all made yesterday for O2 pay as you go top ups at £10 each. Im a bit peeved the bank didnt stop them as they were within minuites of each other. Im 02 contract but I dont suppose the bank were to know that, but £30 top up within 5 mins surely should have set alarm bells rining. So I have called them to report it and managed to get it reimbursed my card cancelled etc etc. When on the phone she checked my pending transactions on the 1st of March there were £28 paypal pings for £1 each. No granted if they were going to come out they would have by now, and if they do the bank will give it me back but. How did they manage to do this, my paypal hasnt been hacked and it doesnt show in my transactions....... I have e-mailed paypal to report.

Is your card registered/stored/associated with your paypal account?

Certainly change your PayPal password as a precaution anyway. I dont know if you can or cant use a registered card whilst not logged in? I know you cannot use a registered card whilst logged in with another account.
  • Yes it is, I think its standard on Paypal. I was looking to do this earlier and couldnt work out how will have another squiz now. Thanks for your response.

Welcome to the world of fraud.
3 x 10.00 to 02 is pretty standard, which I would agree should have been picked up by the security system.
End of the day if its one or ten it makes no diffrence to how its handled.
Card gets stopped. You get your money back. Banks sends some paperwork. Bank gets its money back....
02 lose out (read WE HAVE TO PAY)

PayPal pings are pretty common and will not debit. Could have been 28 new accounts being set up.... (joking)
Again that number on the same day should have prompted a check.

One thing for sure they did not get your card details via paypal.

  • Lol you joke but it could have been :( But my anal checking of my bank everyday foiled them there! Card is now cancelled :)

Is it worth my whilst having a complain at the Halifax about the robustness of its systems? The womans words this morning were I have never seen that many pings on one account! More than anything it worries me that despite my best efforts not to use my card anywhere that appears dodgy this has still happened so could again. Therefore im relying on the bank too to flag anything suspicious yet they appear unable to!

Security on your account has to be by both parties...
    So well done :T

Not really, as security systems look at current patterns of fraud. Of late I can say that 02 fraud has taken a nose dive, so this could explain why it was not picked up.

Everytime you use your card. The retailer side has the full card number. Enough to make this type of fraud.
So while you do your best to keep your details safe...
That retailer you used could have anyone looking after the till rolls. Who could have a long list of criminal convictions

Retailers are the real weakness in the whole system. They do not check staff who have access to these details in the same way as finanical companies do.

  • You should always report fraud to the bank so they can investigate it. I had aeroplane tickets booked on my debit card details fraudulently, which was beyond me.

On that occasion the bank contacted me (santander) and took me through all my recent transactions and they replaced the money.

I think it is up to the bank to make sure they have the right systems in place but I would report it immediately.
    I am a moneysaver
  • The O2 top up seems to be the way they check if the card details are still active, It happened to me last June but luckily for me Tesco spotted it. While I was on the phone to Tesco fraud dept they tried to spend about £3k somewhere in the USA!

I'm suprised that it wasn't spotted by your bank but at least your card is now stopped.

Have you recently used the card to make a purchase over the phone (insurance or the like) I'm sure this is how my card details got into the hands of fraudsters as it occurred within a couple of days of using my card like this and it was the first transaction I had made as it was a 0% card to be used specifically for things like my insurance.

Banks do have systems in place. But given that banks are limited on the number of transactions they can block. They have to get it right. I know that in cases like this were security has not kicked in. We will raise a issue with the team that deal with the rules in the security system to see if anything has gone off.
As well as 02 are one of the bigger telco's and you would be amazed at the number of people who do top up £10, even 3 times in a day.

So it is upto the account holder to keep a check on their account. As they are the one person, who know exactly what they have spent.

Funny old world we live in as here we are seeing people question why transactions were allowd through, yet at other times people are moaning that thransactions are declined....

Real fine line a bank has to walk with its security systems to get it right. :D

  • I suppose its the downside of the modern world and at least my bank dealt with it swiftly, well one I got through after 20 mins waiting!

Lol Dalesrider true enough, but I would rather they accidentally stopped me rather than some scroatty person spending my hard earned!
