I get a lot of mine from the local market/carboot. There is a stall that does 4 packs for £1.

I even bought large packs of beans and peas for that price, Then a week or two later they put them upto 50p each.

Flowers and veg still 4 for £1 though. Still in date also, So not 10 years old stuff.

Also i lookout for end of the year bargains. Peas for 30p a pack. 300 - 500 in a pack.

In 2008 or 2009 (maybe later)? I planted some pea seeds with a best before 2006. I threw loads in because i thought they would not grow.
We were swamped with them. I think they all grew.

Lidl sell very reliable seeds. The packets aren't huge but there's normally plenty for the average vegetable plot. There's a good range of types too of the more commonly used varieties. 29p a packet for the small type of seeds, 49p for peas and beans.

  • Hi folks, thanks for the replies so far... since I don't have a Lidl near my work, I popped down to Aldi on my lunch. They have loads of gardening stuff in at the moment, but better than that they had loads of seeds reduced to 10p a packet.

    I came back with:

    - spring onions
    - mixed salad leaves
    - purple sprouting brocoli
    - beetroot
    - 2 x varieties of carrots
    - coriander
    - aubergine
    - radish
    - leeks
    - sunflower
    - cosmos
    - basil
    - cornflower
    - tomatoes

All of them were "packed in year ending nov/dec 2012" and sow by 2014... so should be ok. Might be worth checking your local branches.

They also had cauliflower, parsnips and a few others that I didn't want.

The only thing i know not to buy old seeds of are parsnips.

Seems the seeds need to be fresh. Old ones just wont work.

Although my peas maybe off. I planted them at the weekend and they have not grown yet :D

I thought i would be eating fresh peas by the weekend but nothing, Not one shoot :)

I found a sachet of seeds Little black things. No idea what they are? Are radish seeds triangular and black?

May have to sow seeds and give the plants away. I only enjoy the sowing part.

Cannot wait for the its grown moment.... :)

Another vote for Premier here, for the range one doesn't get in the supermarket displays. :)
