    reasons for a slow desktop:

to many processes / services running,
    malware / trojans / virus's
antivirus software >old as in 2009 -2011 norton, mcafee, kaspersky
firewall software conflicting with the above.
not enough memory installed for the OS
windows xp can run in 256mb but runs smoother with 1gb minimum
windows 7 64bit wouldnt recommend anything under 4gb
    windows 7 32bit 3gb, as 32bit wouldnt see more than 3gb
    windows vista as xp
    swap file set to big
low disc space on C drive.

These are just the first things i could think off of the top of my head.

Since you will have a back up of your files (surely you do have this?), then doing a Factory Restore will simply involve reistalling any afternarket software and then copying your data back over.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If it's only slow when loading websites, the problem is likely to be with your internet connection, or possibly shortage of disk space.

If it's slow in general, then could be any number of things.

Start by telling us the make and full model number, and the edition of Windows it's using.
How do I add a signature?
