compensation for an alternative flight due to flight cancellation

Hi
Back in September 2010 I had a flight cancelled by Easyjet.
They offered us to be put on another one of their flights but it was 8 days later.
So I booked an alternative flight with another airline.
Can I claim the money back for the alternative flight booked?

I don't think so, the rules are they must look after you during a delay until they can get you back or you get the costs of the unused one way ticket. If you make your own way back, it is at your own expense0
