Help! Been sacked but can't sign on

Hi,
I'm hoping for some advice on my current situation.
I was employed in a small school over the last 5 months but was sacked last week.
On checking my last few payslips it appears my boss was not paying tax but was paying n.i.
I was definitely not self employed as I have a contract of employment and my hours were dictated to me.

I was going to sign on until I find something but a friend advised thàt as no tax has been paid, I would not only be fused the dole but would also receive a big tax bill.

Can anyone advise please?

PS
I don't think I will be able to discuss this with ex-employer as they are also refusing me my holiday pay that they owe from last year.
When I asked for it on leaving the company, subtle threats were made regarding bad references for my next job so communication is not really possible with these muppets.

Tax is nothing to do with JSA so you can definately sign on. Were you earning enough to be paying tax?

You can sign on. It's the NI payments which entitle you to Contributions Based Job Seekers Allowance. Tax is another issue.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

    Hi beanie
Thanks very much for your reply
Since July 2012 I have earned roughly £7000
Is there a limit of about 8000 or so where I don't have to pay tax?

What have you earned since April 2012?

Why were you sacked? Was it gross misconduct? Contribs-based JSA might not be available to you, it depends on how much NI you've paid in the last two years.

I had actually handed my notice in a few days prior, I don't think it went down well. I called in sick and was subsuquently sacked.
I was abroad before July 2012 and have worked 7 months since then making N! contributions.
I'm not sure how much I've paid though is thee any way to find out
They said my p45 is in the post

How long were you overseas? Your claim would be based on tax years 10/11 and 11/12, so the NI payments in your last role would not count.

Do you have capital over £16,000?

BitterAndTwisted makes a good point - your claim will go to a decision maker to decide if you had good cause for losing employment. However you will be paid whilst this decision is pending.

You need to have paid or have been credited with the right class of NI contributions in the tax years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.

If you don't earn enough you can claim income based jobseekers allowance and you can claim that having never made any national insurance contributions at all.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
