5A are only found in older things and have been phased out.

Not entirely; many telecomms and IT equipment can still specify 5A.
"Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."

  • I don't know if it's much help but I have a 5 amp fuse in my old Roberts radio cassette player, so maybe if you've got an old radio around the house it might be worth a look? My shredder has a 3 amp fuse.

5A fuses are relatively rare. Are you sure that 5A is what is required - as opposed to what you actually found fitted?

This is not advice - just what I might do - I would try a 13A fuse to establish whether or not it was the fuse. If 13A worked, I would double check the actual fuse required and if it was 5A, I would buy some on Monday. I would not continue to use the shredder with a 13A fuse unless this was specified as correct.

    :D It's exactly what I'd do.

Standards changed quite a while ago (1973). BS1362 permits any fuse size up to 13A in a plug, but the preferred sizes (and the only ones which detailed info is given on) are 3A and 13A. New appliances will normally be found with one of those two values.

There should be a plate on the shredder telling you how much power/current it draws. If it is less than 3A or about 700W, there is nothing wrong with using a 3A fuse.
