Does reducing & cooking wine burn off the alcohol?

Does reducing wine burn off the alcohol?

Got 1/3 of a bottle of wine left over from last night, I'm on anti Bs that I really can't drink on. I'm making a beef casserole today & I started reducing the wine to add to the slow cooker, then I realised maybe it doesn't burn off ALL the alcohol & I shouldn't use the reduced liquid.

So does reducing & cooking it really burn it all off?

Ethyl alcohol's boiling point is 78.37°C. So, the answer is yes.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

    Hi

As I understand it alcohol reaches its boiling point and turns to gas at a lower temperature water does. So yes I believe the alcohol should have evaporated away.

Even if there's a tiny amount left, it's not going to affect your anti biotics.

Not all of the alcohol burns off as it takes time to do so and some alcohol is generally left.

Dane I've added it now :-(
  • Why not freeze the wine reduction and use it when you have finished your ABs.

    Hope you feel better soon,
    SM

1/3 of a 75cl bottle of wine at (assuming) 12% contains 3 units of alcohol. depending on how long you reduced the wine prior to putting in the sc, and how long you simmer in the sc it will have (according to that chart) between 5 and 30% of the the 3 units left:

so between a sixth to one unit, which will be divided by all the portions you have.

move dinner back an hour and simmer it for that extra so that it has less than a sixth of a unit between all portions.

you are then brining the alcohol content into the range that can occur naturally in fresh fruit juices, does the label also says to avoid drinking orange juice?

BTW - this isn't medical advice, just info on the maths and alcohol content in various foods/cooking methods.

    you could ring NHS direct?
    :AA/give up smoking (done) :)

Thank you. No nothing about fruit juice :-)
I simmered it for about 10 mins & reduced it from 1/3 bottle to about half a cup.

I've then put that in the slow cooker & will simmer for about 6 hours or so.
