Faster payments slow between FD and Santander?

I opened a Santander 123 account a couple of weeks ago, and also have accounts at First Direct, Smile, and Halifax.

Transfers between Santander, Smile, and Halifax (either way) appear instant, and between First Direct and Smile or Halifax is also instant - in all cases by the time i've logged in to the recipient account the money is there. But three transfers from First Direct to Santander have all seemed to take many hours (send morning, arrive late afternoon) while a transfer from Santander to First Direct on friday afternoon still hasn't arrived by Sunday morning.

Neither FD or Santander have been able to tell me why this is, and as long as it arrives on monday they've met the 'next working day' caveat of faster payments. But it would be useful to know that this is a generally slow route to take, as i'll fairly regularly need to move money between the two. Anybody else have this issue?

Guess if necessary I can go Santander -> Halifax -> First Direct, which, unlike the direct route, is instant...

Usually they are instant, but they seem to have some problems today.
In fact I am not even able to do a transfer ATM:

    Please note.

ETA: managed to make at transfer after logging off and on. It was to Nationwide, not Santander, and definitely is not instant. After 3 minutes I still don't see it on the destination side.

I logged into my Building Society last night (none of the above) and there was a notice on their website saying the FP system would be undergoing maintinance today which may delay payments. Maybe you've been caught up in that.

Or, is it the first time you've gone Santander > First Direct? If so, it might be in their fraud checking process. If this is the case, next time it will "know" that the FD account is safe and will go through quicker.
  • I have had a nightmare with FP from Santander to Halifax. They fail and show as rejected and then go through second time of asking.

An ongoing problem or just today?

My money finally arrived to Nationwide.
A transfer from Lloyds to Santander was instant, but from Santander to Nationwide wasn't instant again.
  • Credits from HSBC > Nationwide always (For over a year) take an hour or two, dependent on the time of day.
My Payment from Santander> Bank Of Scotland & HSBC was instant.
& My FP from HSBC to Santander was also instant - all this afternoon.
Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

I transferred money between accounts on a Tue morning using FP and it didn't appear until Thu morning. And that was between two NatWest accounts, both mine! Maybe the FP stands for F!!!ing Pathetic.

I've never had any problems with payments between First Direct and Santander, or vice versa. I just made a payment from Santander to FD, it appeared immediately in my FD account.

Thanks for the feedback folks, I wonder if this

could be the answer, it's the first time I have done the transfer this way round.
