Today has been sunny and I've done nothing more than potter about in the garden!

You make me envious with your words!! I can't wait to get to the stage in my life where I can choose to spend the day in the garden. Hopefully if I'm successful in my project that'll be sooner rather than later ;)

The very best of luck to you. :) Just make sure your project is something you love doing for it's own sake and if you have more than one project on the go - so much the better.

    Hey CWSmith,

When im back in the UK il sort you out an ecommerce site and put you on the right path for the marketing front.

It's the least I can do.

:AWhoa, Lighthouse, you don't owe me anything - quite the opposite! As it is, I'm now ultra keen to jump into anything computer-based on TB - stuff that I wouldn't have touched with a barge pole a few weeks back and that is thanks to you!

Plus I haven't got a lot of stock yet either ......... as I said, there aren't enough hours in the day! :)
  • Stock? As in stock market? Is this something I could try?

Yep, pretty much what I've done too! Lovely to be out in the sunshine instead of sitting in some fluorescent lit hell-hole :D

It can take time to build up additional income streams but the pay off is worth it. I've got friends in full time employment, doing the traditional 9-5 (or more), stressed to the eyeballs, worried sick about their failed pensions etc and spending fortunes on childcare and travel expenses and subject to corporate bolloX on a daily basis. Not a nice place to be a lot of the time but they can't see beyond it.

If you work it right and in a way that you enjoy, you can forge yourself a very nice life and have the luxury to choose how and with whom, you spend your time. Priceless!

I wish you the very best of luck in your 'quest'. If you want it badly enough, you'll get there! :D

  • I think this is a brilliant idea and will be following this thread with interest.

My story is slightly different in that I had a pay cut forced upon me by my employer (very unfairly but naff all I can do about it unfortunately), so I decided that I would no longer work the hours they were no longer paying me for. Since much of my work is outside the office, as long as they get the output and quality they're after, I'm largely free to set my own workload and agenda and my boss is happy (and none the wiser about how many hours each job has taken me).

I set aside these few hours each week to other income generating activities to cover (and sometimes exceed) the shortfall in my wages which satisfies not only my financial requirements, but also my desire to feel I haven't been beaten by an unjust pay cut!

I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Also don't forget dropping a day will result in less tax and ni to pay anyway. I dropped a day and found it OK.

Could you tutuor on the day off? Or do exam marking. invigilation. Or house sitting, dog walking, gardening etc etc. What about networking to see if any services are required in your local area. Just thinking out loud here as you may hate dogs!!

If all else fails maybe you could do supply on the day off.

    Good luck!!
  • Thanks for the support :)

If I dropped a day but then make the same amount of money through additional means then wouldn't I still end up paying the same in tax, NI etc anyway?

'so that I can go to my boss and [STRIKE]tell him I only need to[/STRIKE] ask him nicely if it might be possible to change to working 4 days a week.

Fixed that for you. Otherwise I think you might find yourself working 0 days a week.

I was working full time as a Finance Manager until the beginning of February 2013. At this time I spoke to my employer and told him that I could complete the work load in 3 days and so it would be in hisi nterest to let me work 3 days a week as it would save him money and I could still meet the demands of my role. I now also work 1 day a week doing the accounts for my brothers business on a Friday which leaves me a Monday to spend at my leisure.

It is a fantastic feeling on a Sunday night knowing that I still have another day to spend as I wish. I believe that this is the perfect balance, my partner is expecting a baby in 3 weeks and so a 3 day weekend will be perfect as I have quality time to spend with my family. I feel much less stressed and feel like I have more time for myself and my family. I believe a shorter working week does have its health benefits.

I also run an affiliate website which generates a modest income for me and is fun to manage. This is a great way of earning a bit of income from home. I used Moonfruit which is a site builder so no previous webdesign/coding knowledge is required. For those who are more ambitious WordPress or Joomla might be preferred. Simply find a topic that interests you, write about it and include a bit of advertising, subscribe to Tradedoubler or Commission Junction who have a wide array of advertisers who pay generously for your visitors who subscribe to them via your website.

I was studying at university a couple of years back and in my spare time I participated in Matched betting, this is definitely worth getting into if you can get your head around it. I made about £2000 in my first 2months, however the profitability declines after this amount has been reached. I am sure you have all come across the Matched Betting Thread in the MSE forum, if you are looking to earn some money from home in your spare time I would definitely recommend looking into this. But research it thoroughly before delving into it as mistakes can be costly. It was doing this which led me to create my website.

I also tried the mystery shopping, I didn’t find this as profitable and found that it was encouraging me to eat too many meals at PizzaHut, McDonalds, KFC and Domino’s. My favourite job was earning £10 for having an induction at Esporta Health Club, this is a popular pastime for some and I believe that as you progress the jobs get bigger and better. I only participated for a few months but the junk food diet wasn’t doing me very good.

I have subscribed to this thread and am very interested to read the experiences and ventures of others. We are a nation of innovators and entrepreneurs; you never know where your ideas may lead. Making £500 selling artwork one month, maybe this could lead to £5,000 a month in a years’ time. I like the idea of the youtube video, I am interested to know how much you get for the Netflix advertisement on start-up, I might look into doing some form of video myself.

    Good luck
