On the O2 site the xperia z on contract is £549 plus £11pm for 24 months for 50 mins, unlimited texts and 100mb data, yet the handset on payg is £499 and a payg sim for £10 gets 75mins 500 texts and 100mb data and the allowance doubles every 3 months, why would anyone want the contract option?

I think this is obvious. Most top of the range phones (excluding, possibly iPhones) cost more on a contract than sim-free/ PAYG + sim-only.

I guess a lot of people can't afford the initial outlay for the handset so opt for contract

I think you may have nissed what I mean, on contract the customer pays upfront £549 and then the monthly, where as on PAYG, the handset is £50 cheaper than the contract price and without the comittment to 24 looooong months

    So did I ... :o

£549 is unusually big amount to pay upfront for a contract handset. A pricing error?

Sure it can, it's an £11/month price plan - there's no fat in it for a handset subsidy.

That contract will only be useful to texters. 60 minutes of talk time and 100mb of data? It shouts low user.
