BT Vision & Broadband

I have BT Vision and Broadband and should be getting 7 - 8mb speed where I live presently. Just recently the broadband service has been dropping and the speed has been right down as far as 234 kbs which isn't fast enough to get Vision let alone to be able to use the internet.

I have an engineer coming out on Monday, if they still can't resolve the speed issue am I within my rights to cancel the contract with them and go elsewhere?

As I work from home this is affecting my earnings and employment.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the service isn't 'fit for purpose' then yes, you can cancel. With a full refund too. But it sounds more like you have a fault on your line.

Er no. Nothing to do with being fit for purpose - but that you were sold 'up to' a certain speed. If the went over this, you have grounds for complaint. Ludicrous, I know, but there you are. BT's vision service should be easier to get out of.

Issues you forget to mention are the high contention rates (how many folk in your area are using the same bandwidth, if you are using wifi - which has its own problems).

No. What I have said is true. I understand what your talking about. But thats not what I'm talking about. And nor is the OP either. As contention would not cause such wild fluctuations in BB speed. And nor would wireless either. There is merely a problem which needs fixing. Thats all.

If you are using your residential contract for running a busines, then you are technically in breach of the T&C's anyway, so don't try to use that as a negotiating ploy.
Yes, if the line speed will no longer support BTV then you should be able to cancel that without penalty on the grounds given, but not your separate line rental and broadband contracts. That's one of the major issues with BTV-it locks you into BT's overpriced and poor quality broadband service.
