natwest overdraft but only a blue debit card

I previously have said that i applied for an overdraft with natwest and was declind. This was quite some time ago now. This morning i decided to give it one last go before moving banks and today they have accepted me. They did offer me upto 1000 but i only put 200 as i don't need the overdraft. My question is now they have given me an overdraft am i more likely to get a purple debit card if i find my blue debit card is damaged ;) and i request a replacement ?

You can have an overdraft and still only be accepted for the blue debt card, it depends on how much of a risk they think you are.

If you request a replacement you'll still get the blue card as that is what you currently have on your account.

You will need to see if they will upgrade you to a servicecard as this is the one that is purple and is a full ofline card.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

so the overdraft is meaningless in the context of debit cards ! i did go into one of my local branches. they just didn't have a clue what the difference was when i enquired about a purple card and they insisted i would get a card that could be used on train petrol pumps etc. But i still got a blue one.

    Well yes and no.

Sometimes you can be offered a Servicecard even if you can't get an overdraft, and vice versa.

All you can do is pop in to branch and ask if they can replace your full-auth card with a service card, they even used to be able to override what the system says, but this was years ago.

If you want to make a case just say you are a high-miler in your car and require the use of Pay at Pump machines on a regular basis due to the times at which you travel...

Hopefully i might have a found a way to get a purple service card without going into my branch or any other. i do want to stay with Natwest its a good bank and i like the ipad and iphone banking apps. I use them most days. thanks to everyone who gave advice.

well, this threat is 6 months old, but I was glad to find it. my mates were thinking I was making this up. lol.

first of all, I have an excellent credit rating with all the 3 agencies, no missed payments ever, 7 direct debits on my natwest silver account, never overdrawn, and have a decent salary. so, well, I would think I am an okay customer to have.

I have a Credit Card with Natwest with a decent limit and always pay back every month in full.
In addition, Natwest offered me an overdraft on my select silver account of 3000, but I only took 100 as I dont really need it. Anyway, BUT, LOL, I still have the BLUE off-line card.

Apparently I am not eligible for a purple card, because of my internal credit rating (even though I was told I had a 4 out of 10, with one being the highest).

I just dont get it, honestly, they give me an offline credit card with a decent limit, offer me a high overdraft, but will not provide me with a purple contact less debit card.

I have spoken to 10 people, from the branch, to lending, to the complaints team. They all tell me I really handle my account very well and they do not know either why I dont get the purple card. Yet, I am told they can not override it, as its only the computer that decides (really, LOL, what bank is that?).

I would just love to find one person in Natwest who says, hmmm, thats really strange, that does not make sense, lets see if our computer algorithm is wrong. but no, none of the staff really care (mind you they are all really nice though).

The crazy part is, my mate moves over from Sweden, has no credit history with them, gets the purple card without any approved overdraft. LOL, where is the logic in that.

Really, I do not want to leave Natwest, but I feel really messed about. What a shame ...

any advice anyone who I could talk to who really cares within Natwest? Thanks.!!!
  • Regardless your mate from Sweden would be classed as high risk to the bank, all new customers are classed as high risk because the bank don't know what their performance is like fully and to update the internal credit rating you must perform on your account with Natwest.

As for knowing what rating it is out of 10, it's internal only and anyone giving that out could get sacked.
  • just to update my previous post: a month after posting the above I finally got my purple contact less card. LOL. It took them 3 goes (!) to send me that particular card. Now, I dont know whether it was time with the bank or my constant complaining that got me that card. All I can say is, they do upgrade you from Blue to Purple, but their criteria are a mystery to me.

It's all based on Natwests internal credit scoring which takes into account your salary, age, years banking with Natwest and previous/current external & internal credit scoring (charges, defaults, returned dd etc etc) Loads of variables to take into account.

The following is not gospel but a good indication; banked with NW for over 3 yrs, salary £1K+ For that period with no gaps of income, 21 yrs +, no default charges of any kind including going overdrawn then you should be getting a purple card. If you have been declined this then ask them to raise a complaint in their internal complaint system & NW will carry out a full investigation & reply in less than a month. If you're not happy with the outcome & meet the above you will need to ask the branch the process to carry out an appeal itemising line by line the reasons why you have been declined. You will always get the purple card if you carry out this process.
