    Aren't these very risky?

    Indeed they are.

Don't take any investment advice from this man, he advised people to invest in BP before their issues in the Gulf of Mexico amongst other investments which haven't been great. Whoever is silly enough to take advice from a random person from Swindon on the internet deserves to lose money.

I prefer to spread my risk. All eggs in one basket can mean that nothing hatches.

I'd love to know the extent of your portfolio. For someone so risk averse I can't imagine it amounts to anything more than a few quid in a cash ISA. No wonder you are so jealous of people who do have cojones to invest and get a good return.

If it suited you could always look further afield. Parts of Canada looked mighty cheap compared to Blighty in the past.

Alas, the pound buys you less dollars now and property in places like Calgary have become a lot more expensive.

People are looking to minimise risk in all sorts of ways.

Do you have family there to help out?

Isn't deep see oil drilling an inherently dangerous process (well any sea drilling really) with risks off the risk scale?

Do you think anybody knew that the well was going to blow? Do you think BP were deliberately reckless and wanted to bring this on themselves?

I would have thought BP would be a good medium term bet.

Yes. It's like many things. We originally got involved to help out at a key time. It wasn't part of any pre-defined strategy.

I remember looking at some new builds with my father over there in Calgary. What you got for several hundred thousand dollars was great compared to the typical shoe box you might get over here for that sort of money.

I think we accept property in UK which is poor on living space.

Maybe but do your own research and don't take any investment advice from a random guy on an Internet forum about investments, they"re not investment gurus otherwise they wouldn't be posting soundbites on an Internet forum with 20 users.

Personally I am going to follow the advice of my old mate "the Schiffmeister"

    "Stocks will crater"

He might actually be right for a change, albeit about 4 years late

A relative buys what I call 'toy cars' as his core investment strategy. I can't say his wife is too impressed. (He calls them collectibles). I remain unconvinced.

Of course, sods law will prove him right and me wrong! It's guaranteed :)
