I'd have a quiet word during the day when you're calm and hopefully they'll apologise, they might not have even realised they were being so noisy.

I'd hold fire on getting the LL involved just yet, if they ignore your polite request then consider it. I live in a flat and I'd be a bit upset and hurt if a neighbour felt like they couldn't come and have a word with me directly. And it is easy to get carried away with talking outside etc if you've never been on the receiving end of noisy neighbours.

Getting the landlord involved is pointless: they are not the tenant's mother and have little power other than to not renew their tenancies. Which could have a financial implication for them which may not be welcome.

This is something which you need to deal with yourself at the times when it happens. Politely, if possible. At 4am I would be inclined to not be particulary polite about it. Some people just inhabit a self-absorbed bubble and think they're entitled to behave in any way they like. They need to be reminded that they can't always do that.

Yes I think I will tackle it head on when it happens again, just with a polite word to name then aware of how loud they are. I was using ear plug to no avail the other night but when he gets up to talk on the phone at 6am it's too late by then to get back to sleep so I'm sure popping down to talk to him will have some impact.

Are you renting? Can you ask your Landlord to get involved.

If you are renting it might be time to look elsewhere!

No I own my flat unfortunately! My block and the other side is fine and look after the place reasonably well, it's just the bedsit building and students next door to them where it goes a but down hill!

Wait until they all go to bed and then start hoovering loudly at 9am for 90 minutes.

Then go outside and mow the lawn.

    Put the washing machine on.

And then put an aerobics dvd on loudly and start dancing.

    Petty perhaps. But so satisfying.

My mother used this trick when I was little - the neighbours teenage kids used to play music really loud as soon as their parents were out. My mum used to put something really naff like the Spinners on the dancet at full blast and go to the shops. I have used it in adulthood rarely but to great effect! It works the naffer the better.

I would speak to them during the day and tell them it's disturbing you, they might not even know that they're being loud, I know I didnt, but then I had very strange neighbours.

Anyway, don't let it build up inside.

Spinners fan here! Probably because I'm old enough to know it's spelled "dancette" (happy days!)

First of all speak to them when you are calm and not stressed, be as polite as possible but get your point across, hopefully that will help, they no doubt don't even realise they are disturbing you, if you don't tell them......good luck!

check with the council, is it registered as a house of multiple occupancy (HMO)?
Unfortunately students have parties, if its every weekend get council involved to measure noise levels.

We have had a similar problem with people chatting and smoking outside the front entrance to our building which just so happens to be right next to our bedroom and we too have single glazing. Even if they aren't talking particularly loud we can hear the full conversation. We went out and asked them to either go inside their own flat or to smoke/chat at the back of the building instead. They were very apologetic at the time and went inside. However it did happen again on several occassions and so did loud parties resulting in people drinking and smoking outside, the entance door constantly banging shut and taxis arriving and departing at all times of the night/early hours. They annoyed everyone in our building so much that eventually their landlord got sick of us complaining and got rid of them. They have since been replaced with people 'more suitable to the building'.

So I would say just go out and talk to them next time they do it. Tell them that you can hear their whole conversation and that they are disturbing you and ask if they could go elsewhere if they want to chat in the middle of the night/early hours. Hopefully they will understand, but if they don't then see if you can get the details of the landlords and complain through them.

I know how it feels and it is so frustrating / stressful when you desperately want to sleep and inconsiderate people are keeping you up! Good luck!
