If they can't do "Cardholder not present" transactions, they probably won't be able to do credit card transactions at all.

Which all seems a bit fishy to me, if they don't take card payments maybe they don't want their customers to have S.75 protection?

It's not like "being a small outfit" is an excuse, even I can take card payments... and I'm just an individual...
No, not all contracts allow cardholder not present transactions, in fact the vast majority of bricks and mortar retailers fall into this catagory, only being allowed to do chip and pin transactions.

Cardholder not present is a risky transaction, if a retailer without this permission does one, it's an instant chargeback if it's disputed.
With the permission the retailer is protected as long as they have all the security details on the card, the 3 digit number on the back proves the card was at hand when the transaction was done, leaving the CC to pick up the bill if it is fraud.

Or perhaps, they decline to have a merchant card account? If they as pay by cheque or BACS, I would assume payment by plastic is not a possibility.

I would be worried by a place such as this, that does not have the facility to take card payments....

Non acceptance of cards could also mean financial difficulty.
Take extreme care when booking. If it was me I would tell them that I would pay on the day or walk away.

Could the reason they don't appear to accept payment by CC is simply that they do not want to pay circa 3% commission to the card company?

Have you rung and asked them?

If it is the above scenario then perhaps they would accept a card payment for a token amount and the balance by cheque/BACS which I believe would give the S75 protection.

If the main reason you wish to pay by CC is because you don't have the funds available elsewhere than perhaps you can negotiate a compromise on the fee.
