The rising cost of fruit and veg
Comments
-
We are paying for last summers poor weather, potatoes will only increase in price.
Regarding fruit Prices, exporters that traditionally sent their product to Northern Europe are now sending more to Asia and other emerging markets.
China has a huge market for fresh produce.
India the same with a middle class population ready to pay better money than other consumers.
Add Brazil and South Africa which both now have huge domestic markets the need to export is getting less.
All down to the greedy ? UK supermarkets who wish to make 40-50% profit.
Will still be some deals but no where what we are used to."Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

this is where a wonky veg shop would do so well
wonky/ not so perfect shaped veg doesn't mean bad quality and i wish more shops would sell us non - straight cucumbers and smaller than average apples etc they'd be snapped up like a shot0 -
Cheapest is not much good if it is inedible.
I find Tesco stuff just picked at the wrong time just too early so tasteless. The buyer obviously does not eat much fruit and veg.
If it is packaged up into the wrong sizes too it just goes off before you can use it all so not cheap as it is a waste.
I have to be in the right place at the right time in the right quantity for me to buy anything.0 -

There's a cucumber farm near us, there's always a skip out the back piled high with bendy cucumbers. What a waste! At least the Turkish veg shops round here sell bendy cucumbers.Grocery Challenge - February £1000 -

But I don't eat potatoes myself, they aggravate my arthritis - I eat sweet potatoes instead and they are expensive! They will only go up in price now the £ has plummeted. :mad:Grocery Challenge - February £1000 -
I've had to make a point of only buying potatoes on yellow stickers, too expensive.

But sweet potatoes count towards your five a day which regular potatoes do not, and they are much lower in pesticides. If you are mashing them pad out with cauliflower, any root veg, chick peas or other beans.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
A bunch of organic bananas in Lidl costs the same as a Pot Noodle in Tesco. 2 x 150g bags of Kettle Chips on offer costs £1 more more than 2kg organic Tesco spuds or 5 organic apples.
So really, how expensive are veg when compared to snacks ? It's the snacks people put in their trolley which cost the dosh. The chocolate, the crisps, the cereals..the carp basically.0 -

Lower in pesticides ? Really ? Where did you hear that from ?"Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

I'll chip in here and say that most of the studies done are in the USA where they are chemical happy.. way fewer pesticides are banned than in the EU.
Myself I'd think sweet potatoes showing contamination in 9.3% of samples would be fairly low I guess, but that pales into insignificance compared to celery with 95% of celery showing pesticides and with one sample showing 13 different pesticides
But the USA is vastly different, they don't have to declare it's GM corn let alone how much Roundup they've used.
Good luck finding any figures in the EU website though.0 -

Agree with this wholeheartedly, meat especially pre-cooked or processed meat products as well. It's amazing how little you get for your money when you are paying for air and convenience. A lot of people don't look at the price per kilo, nor read the ingredients and realise how cheap/ poor quality they are.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
