Recieved an email today offering me a place on a youth training weekend, I would like to do more youth work ( maybe even go back to doing youth work ) this is for the volunteer organisation woodcraft folk, I tried doing some work with another organisation previously, we wernt a fit sadly, I know the organisation I did volunteer with are a good organisation as I know fellow mser's that also work with it, just this particular branch was not up to my standards, it probably didn't help the fact I am qualified and experienced in youth work so I know what is " right" and what is "wrong"
I'm trying to decide whether to sign up for it, part of me really wants to as I think it will be enjoyable and I think it will increase my chances I getting a better job, part of me is worried about money and outlay though, I know as volunteers we shouldn't be paying for anything but I also know that that isn't the case .. I'm also worried that it would take up too much if my time, I don't get a lot if time with mr el as it is and to cut that back even more isn't appealing
But working with kids and helping them grow into independent strong caring adults is appealing I must say0 -
Had to happen eventually El - have you heard about the saying 'give enough monkeys typewriters and one of them will write the complete works of Shakespeare'

It is so easy to put one's head in the sand re money matters. How many of us here, talk about LBMs and the years of non MSE spending we did. I would guess that if cash is really tight, there would also be a real temptation to refuse to think about it and keep that sand firmly topped up.
When we did our first big MFi3 push, we managed to save £20k in interest. I can't imagine many of my friends turning down that amount of money if offered. But any time I mention making overpayments, I am met with blank faces or concern that I must be in financial difficulty to be thinking about my mortgage (not quite sure how that one works..).
Thank goodness for this site and similar minded people.
Elantan, good luck with your volunteering decisions. I hope that you make the choices that are most right for you."Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." William Morris0 -
That's the thing catshark ... I mentioned once or twice ( but I think once as I learned my lesson ) how much we had save in interest as well ... I got a blank uncomprehending stare and met with questions like but your going without just now ( well actually were not but they couldn't get their head around that)
Just had a look at my shift pattern I am working that weekend anyway so will email them back and explain the situation, sadly like most people I need to give one months notice for annual leave and two weeks is not enough0 -

I had a conversation with my mother tonight. My brother has just come out of hospital-been with his partner in their own home for over 25 years. He can't go back to work for at least 3 months. so I said to my mother-'oh well at least they won't have a mortgage to worry about.'
'What to you mean tc, they've still got a mortgage-I don't know how they are going to cope, why wouldn't they have a mortgage?.'
So I explained I don't intend to have a mortgage for the max period-it's going as fast as I can sort it out.
Obviously their mindset is totally different to mine.
As you say, thank goodness we can come here and chat to similar-minded people :jGE 36 *MFD may 2043
