thanks for the input - I've actually found an old phone, which although locked to virgon, has a few quid left on the credit, so I can use that for any emergencies, which buys me a bit of time...

I'm trying to do the isme thing now, I never take credit out, but apparently I can only get the £30 off if I apply for their credit deal. I've just done so and now the website says

"3GECD - £30 VOUCHER- Applied. £30.00be applied to your credit account or refunded to your card, once your order has been processed"

then I click to pay and it gives me the option to 'buy now pay later" - with interest rates, or to pay in full using my card...

If I pay in full will they definitely refund my £30, rather than give it me in credit?

Sillygoose is correct. You don't have to buy it on the credit account, you just have to open the credit account. You will be charged the full price and then within a couple of days the credit is applied back.
You may then cancel the credit account if you wish.

I didn't fancy jumping through hoops to get it from Isme/Very (I presume they also do a credit check which could hit my credit rating.)

So I looked at Amazon, still 1-3 weeks wait. I wanted it as soon as possible, but for no more than £85. I found it at the Vodafone shop. I could have picked it up there and then at the store but would have had to buy £10 airtime (if you already have a Vodafone SIM, you don't have to buy airtime). But their online store doesn't require you to buy airtime. So I ordered from the Vodafone online store. They took my credit card details, the sale went through, then the next day I got an email saying the handset is out of stock.

Amazon tell you it's out of stock right there next to the product description. Why can't Vodafone do that? Thumbs down to Vodafone!

That is bad of Voda. What about the nearly new stock have you tried that at £80?

I know not as nice as totally new but I guess they send them out as upgrades to 'old school' users who send them back because they can't work it.

"All Nearly New phones have been returned to us within 7 days. They've been fully refurbished, tested and repackaged"

EDIT - reread, as your order went through presume you have to wait however long until Voda get stock to send you?

Very/Isme don't seem to stock any more, how much hoop jumping seems to vary, I created an account the same as you would most online stores, ordered and paid in full and that was that. I must have sailed through any credit check as it went through instantly. Now I just get a monthly email telling me I won't get a statement because I have not bought anything since.

Argos seems to have reasonable stock in stores but with £10 credit of course its £94.99.

No jumping through hoops necessary with Isme, I ordered it on a Friday and it was delivered on a Monday-shame it's now OOS.

Update on my Vodafone purchase: I soon got another email saying my phone was dispatched! So it wasn't out of stock for long. Now I have received a txt msg from them saying it will be delivered by courier "between 10:21 and 11:21" (how can they be that precise - sure it's not 10:22 to 11:22?)

And I also seem to have got just over £5 cashback through TopCashBack, even though I wasn't expecting it because the T&Cs about Vodafone cashback weren't very clear about PAYG purchases. If the cashback actually gets accepted, it will be a brand new handset for less than £80. :-)
