Unfortunately we can't use butter as it contains dairy / lactose

coconut oil, this is what we have started using. Much better for health and tastes good and olive oil drizzled cold

I use groundnut oil, costs a fortune but like you I like to know what is in my food

Home made mayo is easy to make

    groundnut oil = peanuts

Gold star for pointing that out

Like I said, I know what's in my food :)
  • I too am having problems with rapeseed oil and palm oil. I find that if I use takeaways my lips and tongue get sore. More and more food manufacturers are using it. I have noticed lately that Walkers crisps are using it so changed to Seabrooks and Heinz mayo has it in. I wrote to M&S this week because they have started putting it in their scones and it is also in their olive oil spread. They have said that they will start labelling but its in almost everything now. Does anyone know which butters its not in please.

The light mayo is rapeseed oil. From December 2014 all foods will have to be labelled with the type of oil they contain under the new Food Information Regulations

This is brilliant news. My DH is allergic to soya so we've been avoiding anything with vegetable oil too. Makes me cross they can be so vague!

all marg is bad, made for the companies to get big profits and advertised as `good for us`. Get back to nature ie butter, with nothing added and containing no commercially produced oils and chemicals
I dropped marg a few years ago, but it was because you could never know what was in there. Butter is at least clear what is in there.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
  • For health reasons I try to avoid all commercially processed oils except for Extra virgin olive oil I(make an exception for crisps because they're so yummy). This is because the processing uses high heat and solvents which makes me think these oils are extremely unnatural and probably bad for me. Also, they tend to be high in Omega 6 fats which are pro inflammatory.
Unfortunately, you do have to make your own versions of foods such as houmous since most SM prepared foods have these oils. If you want to continue eating products with these oils, you will need to look for ones which use sunflower oil rather than rapeseed.

  • I'm quite horrified reading all of this. I don't know if I am allergic to eating anything with rapeseed oil, but know that I am highly allergic to the pollen. When I lived in Scotland, we were surrounded by the blooming stuff. Going back a good few years now, when my daughter was in primary school, they discovered that 66% of the children suffered from asthma. There is no doubt in my mind, that this was mainly due to the amount of oilseed rape grown all around.

Can you believe I've missed about 6 months of posts!

OK, update. Got ill again a few months back. Figured out it was being triggered by Cadbury chocolate.

Cadbury are now using E442 as an emulsifier. E442 is Rapeseed lecithin. They always used to use soya lecithin. Nestl! and Mars are still using non-rapeseed products. One more to look out for!
