Rapeseed oil intolerance question

  • Rapeseed Oil makes me so ill, it affects my whole body, it's like having the flu and stomach bug all in one and lasts for days, knocking me out and unable to do anything.  Before I could work out what was causing it I became so ill the only way I could describe how I felt was as if my body had been poisoned.  It is becoming more and more used in almost all foods, and is very hard to avoid when shopping.  Unfortunately due to disability and chronic illness I am unable to cook for myself and it is an absolute nightmare to buy food for myself.  I belong to a group that is trying to get this oil recognised as an allergen/intolerance, but NO ONE wants to pay any attention to us.  Please everyone complain about this oil, there is also a petition online (on Change.org I think). We NEED TO BE HEARD.

  • Until the 50s when Canadian researchers bred a new strain rapeseed oil/canola oil was toxic to humans. I lived in a village in Kent which was surrounded by the stuff and my GP saw lots of people whose hay fever (and allergies) were triggered by it.i

    This I can totally understand

Luckily where I live there are very few rapeseed fields - we don't have the weather. but when I lived in England, I was suffocating with the rapeseed hay fever

  • Hi, I am a 51 year old male living in the UK. So glad I found this thread as there is almost no info on this subject available anywhere! Since a young age I have suffered from hay fever, made worse when Rapeseed was growing around the house in the fields and asthma which flared up around hayfever season. As an adult the hayfever symptoms have virtually disappeared but I have always suffered from digestive issues, so much so that after many inconclusive tests, I have accepted them as part of life. Certain foods just do me in, mostly junk food and especially when the food is overcooked such as the process McDonalds use(d) whereby they left the burgers in a ‘warmer’. Burgers that had clearly been kept warm absolutely ruined me and gave me stomach aches and upset stomach. Also the fries are best avoided. Although my daughters cant live without a cheeky McDonalds now and then, I have got used to avoiding McDonalds altogether or ordering extra ingredients so as to have them make a fresh(er) ‘grill order’ burger. If I forget to add extra ingredients the symptoms would be back. Recently I understand that they have come away from this method of preserving the cooked food items. Anyway, for the last couple of years I have been suffering from worsening breathing issues, heartburn and ‘post nasal drip’ to the point that I had recently convinced myself that I had a serious chest/lung disorder or similar. My doctor also said, as an ex-smoker, he also suspected COPD was a factor. Inhalers helped but did not seem to really hit the issue. I went for a CT scan last month when my wheezing became so bad that I was going to bed wondering if I would actually wake up again! I have also been obviously very concerned about catching covid combined with these symtoms. Anyway the CT results came back and the lung specialist told me my lungs are completley fine!!! No issues other than some very minor scarring he associates with having bouts of asthma. He told me that we need to look into factors triggering my Ashma which seems to be at the route of these flare ups. Thats when I started looking into allergy triggering foods! All I can say is wow! I intend to pass on this info to the specialist and see what transpires. In the meantime Im reading ingredients and being amazed at how much stuff that I eat contains Rapeseed oil.

I know this is an older thread but I was just messed up by sunflower oil listed as an ingredient when in fact it had been substituted with rapeseed oil because the Ukraine conflict had ruined availability of sunflower!  So that was tight chest and breathlesness and rashes I could have done without.  Beware - currently labels may lie!  Contact the suppliers to make 100% sure...  maybe complain to the seller too, but honestly, the manufacturers are not going to just change labels every 2-3 weeks, or when there is an R in the month without a fight.
  • I have just discovered this thread after a rather embarrassing few days staying with friends when all of the butter type spreads I was given I simply couldn’t tolerate. Neither the smell nor the taste.  Back home I opened a new pack of spreadable Lurpak to discover the same thing.  I was puzzled. I began to think I had a problem with my tastebuds as I’ve been eating masses of Lurpak for years and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Then I realised the common denominator: all these products contain rapeseed oil which they never did before.
It doesn’t take a genius to discover the reason. Money. Rapeseed oil is cheap in comparison to other oils, so not surprising it’s included in absolutely everything these days. Lurpak was roundly criticised a few years ago for its price increases so not surprising the company has looked for a cheaper alternative. Unfortunately, it massively affects the smell and taste of the product for those who are sensitive to it. Goodness only knows what it may be doing to our health.
The blocks of Lurpak now usually used in cooking don’t contain the oil.  I may try these to obtain a comparison and if it works, then I’ll have to give up the convenience of the ‘spreadables”.
If you have any sensitivity to rapeseed oil, whether it’s a full blown allergy or just a dislike of the taste, you really need to check everything you buy.  Even canned soups can be culprits. Very disappointing that trusted manufacturers are producing tripe like this in the name of convenience and profits.

@snuffycat get the blocks of butter and look on Youtube how to turn them into spreadable butter yourself if you can use olive/ sunflower/ grapeseed oils, as it's just one of those and water that is used.
