If I am cooking for GF, friends or family, its from scratch every time,
But me on my own, I dont see the point, thats why they invented M&S. I have better things to do with my time, Shame that NASA never came up with the meal in a pill idea, now that woud have been great, an entire meal in a single tablet.

It's funny, but one of the biggest ready meal/ fast food eaters I've ever known was actually a fully trained working chef.

I had two friends who were chefs and they said the same thing - they reckon all their colleagues live off Pot Noodle and Muller corner yogurts!

I reckon that as well as being bored of cooking, chefs must do a lot of tasting while they work and they're probably just not that hungry by the end of the shift.

Well as a lady of the 'ration' geberation I can assure you that I am
A too mean to shell out good money for ready made meals
B I enjoy cooking 'proper food'
My old Mum would be spinning in her grave at the thought of the wastage by buying and eating a ready made meal. I have tried them and just thought they tasted revolting.
No I still peel my spuds and make home-maade soup and stews and the excess I freeze .I don't waste a thing as that was the way I was brought up. When I see some of these young lasses in the supermarkets buying 'cardboard food' I feel sorry for them and their children. I can undestand it if you have restricted mobility ,but I also have a problem with my mobility at times when the weather is bad and my joints won't agree to work properly ,but thats when my excess freezer comes in handy as I have quite a lot of meals in there to keep me going.

I'm a single man in my early 30s and I mainl cook from scratch. It tastes better and it means I can put proper ingredients in rather than excess salt, hydrogenated tat. I'm now mr pious shopping trolley observer. "Look at that person over there with 4 mega bottles of coke". Tut. "look at them with there bumper packs of crisps". Tut. "ready meals?" Tut.

I can think of many words a lot of people would consider you to be, pious wouldnt be one of them, with that sort of attitude.

Sorry, shopping trolly observers are a bugbearer. ;)

Very interesting thread - although the title "People Cooking" always makes me think of cannibalism.

Since joining this site I have managed to reduce my shopping from £150+ down to £50.00 aweek.:j We dont buy takeaways or eat out,but the other night my husband said he would treat us to fish and chips (5 people)it cost nearly £25.00:eek:   I was in shock,I dont think we will be having anymore takeaways for a long time.:rotfl:I would much rather have something to show for my money like spending £25.00 on a rug that will last years rather than something eaten in 20 minutes.
Its a shame more people dont cook from scratch, alot of my friends say they dont have the time to cook and ready meals are easier.

I am going to try and do more of my own cooking and have pre cooked healthy meals in the freezer ready for times when I can't be bothered to cook (I plain to make more and freeze extra) but it is going to be expensive as to do this I will need to buy a free standing freezer as the one I have with my fridge/freezer doesnt have very much room in it...

ahll - my freezer is tiny too.

It is only 14 inches deep, 19.5 inches wide and 20 inches long. SO it is tiny in comparison to some peoples. I ahve no shelves except a very small ledge for ice cubes which ive managed to put a load of frozen vg in but if your creative with your space then you can fit a fair bit in it. Ive got batch cooked soup, tomato sauces for pasta and shepherds pie servings in there at the minute, not to mention bags of breadcrumbs, and whatever is left from the rest of my food shopping
    Time to find me again

My freezer is a tabletop one so you can imagine how small it is. I'm trying to get it to work harder by cooking more meals from scratch and freezing 3/4 of them. There's only me and most recipes are for 4 people. So I'm emptying the freezer of the junk and non-organic stuff and keeping it for frozen veg, organic ice cream, and home cooked meals. (I'm eating the stuff I'm getting rid of, just not replacing it like for like.)

I started cooking from scratch when I was 9 and could cook a stew in the pressure cooker for nine of us when I was 11. I was the oldest of 7 and that is what we did in those days. I got married at 22 and 37 years later am still cooking from scratch ie I have been cooking for over 47 YEARS

Marks and spencer here I come and who would blame me and people like me. Cooking can be a chore after a lifetime

ps: I hate shopping in mr T so I don`t

pps and edited: today I cooked brown rolls, lentil soup and a quiche. It`s habit
