Ok, I guess that I'l' likely get more or less the same answer to this question. But I am looking to move to Manchester, am living on a budget and have been told that moss side has got allot better to live.
Is this true or should I run a mile in a different direction?
Thanks

It's got something of a reputation, but most of that reputation was gained in the 1980s and has never really been shaken off. It's nowhere near as bad as it used to be though.
That said, I wouldn't choose to live there personally. Try having a look on the other side of Oxford / Wilmslow Road (Rusholme / Longsight) which tends to be a bit better and still budget friendly. I live in south Rusholme / north Fallowfield and have always felt safe here, even as a single woman.0 -
Mosside isnt too bad, not really.
However, Are you planning on city life? Or just outside?
Aston is nice, The outskirts of Denton are rather nice as well.0 -
Even I've heard of moss side (I'm in the deep south, and living with a cheshire gal), and I've driven through it a few times. It looks seriously grim and does have a reputation. It reminds me of some dodgy areas down here ... which plently of people manage to live in. So meh ... go for it!!0

To be honest...it kind of depends on your background and your attitude to the locals...it is still pretty deprived by comparison with higher rates of crime etc (DH is an ex-bouncer and his bouncer friends keep him updated with the gangster goss!!!). I would avoid moss-side completely unless you have lived in an area like that before - it isn't for guys in suits imho!!
Is it specifically that side of Manc you want to be? How long are you willing to commute to work/which transport and what is your budget?0 -
The HIP place to be is Chorlton with the new metro link running straight into manchester and lots of good local shops, cafes, bars and places to Eat.
Moss side has the big ASDA and shops on the main ( Busy) road into town.
You will not find many people in suits or expensive cars parked there.
Born in Moss side and lived in Manchester until I was 24 but now live in the cheshire countryside0 -
Another vote for looking at Denton instead. They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

When I lived in S Mcr, it was the place not to live.
I think that some places have overtaken it in those stakes, but not because moss side has got any better

I was a student in Manchester. Lived in Rusholme (Great Weston Street near Moss Side) and Fallowfield. Although it has improved over the years I'd never consider living there, one to avoid.0

No it's nowhere near as bad as everyone makes out. A colleague lived there for 5 happy years with his wife. They both wore suits to work and both had nice company cars and didn't have any issues.
I cycle though Moss Side most days and it's fine. It's within walking distance of the city centre which would make it far more desirable than the likes of Denton.
And don't assume that because the likes of Didsbury and Chorlton are trendy they are without their social issues. Some friends have just left Chorlton after 5 years to join us in the Cheshire 'burbs because it was getting too rough - check out the burglary stats. Similarly, another colleague who lived in Didsbury went through several years of hell with rampaging teenagers vandalising property. In fact 10 years ago I was subjected to an unprovoked assault in Didsbury by a drunken idiot.
If Moss side is on your radar, also consider Hulme which has seen massive capital investment over the last 10 years and is also within walking distance of the city centre.
If you're young, also consider Fallowfield/Rusholme, which is full of students, which has it's positives and negatives. Over the last 10 years lots of purpose built student blocks have been built, which means many of the traditional student terraced houses are facing a lack of demand, so you might find reasonable rental levels there. Plus it's easy to get into the city centre - buses run through Fallowfield every few seconds.
ps - when looking, check where the property actually is - lots of letting agents will say a house is in Fallowfield when it's actually in Moss Side or Leveshulme.0 -
