Why does the need for sheletered accommodation necessarily lead to needing a nursing/residential home?

If the person is in good health and no indication they will need care in future then they will not normally look back beyond the point that care was likely to be expected to be needed. Someone going into sheltered accommodation may be of good health but it is a possible indicator that future care or some care is needed. So, there is a good chance they would look at things after that point.
HOW many years is enough to avoid the charge of deprivation of assets? Actually have asked this in another post.

The rules allow them to go back as far as they like. There is no timescale. However, the longer the gap, the less likely they are to pick it up.

Equally, a transaction that happened say just 6 months before the means test could be acceptable if the reason was something different. For example, investment bonds are exempt from the means test. If you invest into a an investment bond and have it documented that the reason is tax efficiency then that would be ok. If you had it documented that it was to avoids means test inclusion then it would never be excluded from the means test. Intention is a key reason.

Here we go again. An important and detailed argument about a one post poster who couldn't care less as displayed by his lack of comeback!

To be fair, its not that long since he posted -- the guy is moving to sheltered accommodation, he may be up to his eyes in it trying to make heartbreaking decisions which enable him to fit 7 roomfulls of lifetime memories into one or two. Emotionally consuming I would have thought.
