Thanks everyone for the replies :T

Feel a bit daft now, I'm sure I checked out if it cost me to change my licence and it did. I've never checked it again, so will get my form filled out and get it changed.

Thenudeone, I thought I was right about that! My maiden name is still my name, and if I want to use that instead of my married one then I can. I know it might cause problems, so will get it changed :)
Can't think of anything smart to put here...

Important – you must tell us about any change of name or address. If you do not, you could be fined up to £1000.

From page 7 of this link

But if you use your married name for some things and your maiden name for others, you're not changing you name, are you, you're simply using another name as well. Which is perfectly legal.

The law doesn't define what a change of name means,
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/99 (sec 99 (4) so I think the chances of any prosecution for failing to inform a change from maiden to married name is zero.

As someone who has their maiden name on their driving licence but insurance in married name.

I was involved in a car accident in December, which the police attended. They checked my driving licence and did a check on my insurance. Every detail except my surname tied up and they were happy with that.

I then had to speak to the DVLA in a conference call format whilst making my insurance claim. Insurance company knew me by my married name, and when they got the DVLA rep on the phone conference call style, I simply gave them my drivers licence details, which included my maiden name, not my married name. I actually stated the discrepancy and asked if it was a problem. They said no, and it wasn't.

Basically, as long as it is a name you can truly call YOUR name, your insurance is valid even when your maiden name is on your licence and your married name is on your insurance.

That said, it is definitely worth getting your licence changed. I keep meaning to, but life keeps getting in the way!
