Money or time?

£600 is a big loss although not as big when you factor in childcare for that day. I can see definately see the dilemma but I think I'd choose staying at home for that extra day if you can afford to do so. Not only is it less stress but it's another day with your child. I used to do a four day week in general in my last role and let me tell you it was brilliant. I don't have children yet (one on way though) but even without working 4 days was so precious to me.
Your choice. Would work not let you drop to part time but increase hours back if you wanted to? Or could you work an hour or so longer on the days you do work so you lose less money if it's all a bit too scary? That's my plan when I go back to work. I won't quite be full time but I'll only be shy by about 4hours and will get to work a 4 day week0 -
Sorry, but I just can't work out how you'll lose £600 when you'll only be dropping £5k...Can you explain how you came to this number? What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..0

My OP was vague; it's a drop of £9k.
I was doing 4 days prior to NY, when I increased back to 5.
I'm not sure if work would like it; I think they would accommodate to keep me, but my role would change. But then, I am being pushed along the corporate route which I don't really want; more pressure etc put on me that I don't want etc. It would be a chance to amend my role.Fear is temporary, regret is forever.....:happyhear Baby girl born 27th September - 10 days late!! :happyhear0 -
Is there a chance that you will end up having to take calls, attend meetings etc on your day off anyhow? (hard to know without knowing the type of job you do). Lots of jobs just don't work as part time (or you end up doing the equivalent of full time job for part time pay)0

I went back on 4 days per week after DD1 was born and we managed really well. yes, we could have spent the full time wage, put you always can spend more. More time at home is the way to go as far as I'm concerned if you can afford it. Depends what you do though. I was a community midwife and so lent itself quite well. Different ball game though if you would have to do the same amount of work in the less hours.0

I'd go for time personally.
You can earn more money but you can't earn more time.
If you can afford it and there won't be a major impact financially, go for it.
I've always regretted the time I didn't spend with my children as they were growing up.'The only thing that helps me keep my slender grip on reality is the friendship I have with my collection of singing potatoes'

A fancy holiday.
Or a little girl who knows her Mummy is there to pick her up from school on Friday evenings.....?
Some things you can't buy.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Do you have a proper budget or do you just know you have enough so are OK.
Start with a SOA and make sure you know were every penny goes over a minimum of 12 months(do a 2012 version for history check of where money goes).
http://www.stoozing.com/msoc/soacalc.php
do an estimate for 2013 based on current spend/save profile
then do a "what if" for the reduced income options.
That way you will know what you will have to give up and what you get back(time).
It might just be savings that reduce but you will be in control rather than just guessing which is where you seem to be at the moment.
If you want ideas for cutbacks think like you are in debt and have a read of debtfreewannabe.0 -
Did you give any thought to someone's suggestion thay your husband drop a day rather than you as you earn more than he does?0

£600pcm for one after school pick up seems disproportionate to me, particularly if it impacts on the OP's long term career.0
