#What is it with the # sign everywhere???

#I always thought it was a twitter thing, #but it cant be, #I dont know anyone else with a twitter account so only affects less than 10% of the population #but it seems to be popping up everywhere, #on TV like its got a much more generic purpose #and effects everyone

#So what is it and what do you so with it?

I suspect you see it on TV because the stations want the programs tweeted about.

You could equally ask "What is it with the @ sign everywhere?"

An interesting snippet of information is that BT (Before Twitter) the Americans used to call # "the pound sign", whereas AT they have adopted the Noble British Meaning of # in "the hash tag".

I know what the @ sign is for and how to use it

I dont know what the # sign is for OR how to use it

Maybe you are running away with the same assumption as everyone else - that being that everyone knows what its about - well i dont

I only know that as a hash tag, as used in twitter. You could even make one up, then people could search for that hashtag, it's used more for trending and could be anything. Like #mondayssuck etc...

It's not just twitter that uses it, other social networks such as Tumblr do too.

Those of you old enough to remember IRC will also be familiar with the use of # too.

Reading the link in Ximians post make it clear enough to me. I still cba to follow anything in twitter though.
