Is it really worth buying detached over semi detached?

I think it also depends on the layout of each house. in our new build semi, our lounge is next to the neighbours kitchen, their stairs are in the middle of their house, our stairs are at the opposite side away from their house. Both houses are also very well insulated. Hardy ever hear the 2 children next door.0

My first house was 30's semi. Our neighbour was an elderly lady. Never heard her. After about 18 months she left and our new neighbours were a young chinese couple who worked in a restaurant and came home at about 2.00am and argued at the top of their voices in chinese almost every night. It was not good. I've never owned a semi since nor would I if I could possibly avoid it.0

It's basically all down to cost...if you can afford it then go for it...don't forget that if you are willing to pay the premium then others will be when you sell it on.0

We have a new build semi-detached and can only hear the neighbours when they decide to put dubstep on (Which they can only do with bass on max). We can't hear their hoover/washing machine (Unless they don't have either) or anything, just BASS and if they slam their doors.0

It's not only about your neighbours it's also about you. Sometimes I'd just like to blast some rock music out but I wouldn't unless I lived in a detached property. If loud music or parties is your thing then get a detached house. It's someone else's fault.0

Are the newer semi detached any good, can you hear things through the walls?
Is detached really worth around £30k extra?
It depends on many things - mainly on how sensitive you are to noise. And also if you are noisy yourself!
Detached houses are very expensive and you usually get much less space for your money - are you willing to accept this just for a bit less noise? And it won't stop street noise, planes, trains and automobile noise.
Think it over.0 -

An important point. If you really want absolute silence then you would need to buy a non-estate detached, ideally in a village location. It will cost you loads.0 -
Depends on the house layout. My new build semi has the front door and passage ways/staircases next to each other and the living rooms on the outside of the houses so there's no chance of hearing your neighbours music or vice versa unless you have it rediculously loud!0

I've lived in a Victorian terraced for 7 years and never had any issues. You do hear a little background chatter every now and then, but that's all. I guess the walls must be better quality than modern houses.0

I have lived in a 1900s detached = great, now sold a semi (1950s) where I can hear some very low noise at times, not a major problem at all, I worry more that they can hear me and the kids, Hopefully moving to a detached, can't wait. Personally if budget allowed I'd always buy a detached!0
