Help with making a wedding present

Hi, I'm hoping some of the clever crafty people on this board can help me!
I'm hoping to make something like this for a wedding present, with the names of the couple plus the date under the heart:
http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/sweetdimple/product/personalised-christmas-button-heart

I was going to use a pale lavender coloured card, thin enough to print on but not too flimsy.
I was just wondering how to attach the buttons? Just craft glue? Should I do a heart shaped layer of glue and then add the buttons? Or put glue on the back of each button and stick them on one by one? I'm thinking the second way.

I'm also wondering if this is acheivable or if I will just make a mess!:rotfl:

not much help but they are lovely maybe spray glue would keep it neat
  • looks nice - and achieveable! I'd put glue on the back of each button and stick it down. Also, I think I'd lay out all the buttons to get a nice pattern before I stuck any down. Good luck!

I made a button canvas at the weekend using a hot glue gun.

I put a dot of glue on the back of the small buttons and a larger bit of glue on the bigger buttons. With the really small buttons and other little bits I added on, I used my glue gun to draw a line of glue onto the canvas, then put the buttons onto the glue.

I used blue tac to start with, to place all the buttons and then I could move them without disturbing the shape too much. Then moved a few at a time, taking off the blue tac and glueing them down.

That might be a bif of a faff using blue tac, but it was my first time :o
Can't think of anything smart to put here...
  • I'd probably go for a hot glue gun. Craft glue can be quite runny and wet and might make your card go soggy or warped if you use enough to hold a button on.

    A sweet idea :)

Personally I'd glue the back of each button. If you glued the heart first, the glue would probably begin to dry out before you had finished sticking all the buttons on. Besides I think it would look more professional if you cant see the glue.

Have a sheet of paper in front and rearrange all the buttons on there before attempting to stick anything down.

Not sure if craft glue will be strong enough - its mostly intended for paper. Buttons can weigh heavy so probably need something stronger to fix them securely.

I know! I'm hoping to make one for my daughter's room first as a test.

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions, I'm going to get a glue gun or the other glue that was mentioned (sorry can't think of the name now) and I'll be arranging the buttons first then glueing them separately on to avoid mess.

    I will report back!:)

Do you think glue dots (you know, the peel off ones) would hold buttons on one of these sorts of pictures? Has anyone tried them? (Just thinking it might be less messy)
