There is a comparison between horsemeat & minced beefs nutritional values here:
    http://www.zoeharcombe.com/2013/02/horsemeat-scandal-whats-all-the-fuss-about/

But we're not talking about nice juicy steaks of anything are we? - we're talking about minced meat and for mince to be called "mince" it only needs to be “skeletal muscle with naturally included or adherent fat and connective tissue” to be legal.....gross if you ask me....whatever the animal....and that's the good stuff!

Mechanically separated meat (MSM) and Desinewed meat (DSM) and "Baader meat" and "3mm mince".

    • MSM or mechanically separated meat is a red paste produced by forcing fragments of meat from animal bones using high pressure water
    • DSM or desinewed meat is produced from the same source but using low pressure. The meat product is said to be more visually akin to a fine mince
    • Baader meat is another type of desinewed meat, produced on a low pressure extraction machine made by German company, Baader
    or scraps off the bones....

A lot of food that is sold as "fresh" has travelled all around the world and been frozen and defrosted numerous times :(

It can't be called meat though if it's MSM.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

    Apparently, it can.

    Also Chicken
One chicken suppler said: 'Declarable MSM is derived from chickens with all the meat and skin in its original format and minced via the Baader machine, all the bones are separated mechanically. This format can be declared as meat in the ingredients.'

Tasty? Does it really matter if it's beef or horse?

Most pine nuts and garlic seems to come from China these days. Regarding the pine nuts, they're not always pine nuts. Got two friends who ate the dodgy ones, you get an unpleasant taste in your mouth for weeks after eating them.

  • Whilst these stats are interesting, it somewhat misses the point of the horse meat scandal. This issue is not whether we would want to eat horse meat nor whether it posed a health threat. The issue is that the meat was not what it was purported to be. The retailers will be seeking compensation from their suppliers and we believe that we should be compensated too. Welcome. :) That's the angle of the media and some members of the public, for others of us the main point is whether it is safe. We each have different priorities opinions and belief systems, from my POV as working in and researching lifestyle healthcare for a couple of decades I could equally well claim you have missed the point.

I found biggish bulbs of garlic from Argentina in Marks and Spencer. I won't buy the Chinese stuff it's horrible.

    Here's smoked French garlic

I would be happy to have the choice of horsemeat, whether or not I choose to eat it would be akin to rabbit, pigeon or duck, of which I have tried once and never likely to again.

So long as I know what meat it is I am buying, I know what it is I am cooking. I generally get my mince from the butchers and cook bolognaise, curries or casseroles from fresh, we have had the odd burger or lasagnia from Tesco assuming they were beef. Whether or not they contained any Beef, we still enjoyed them.

Certain brands I will never buy again, they have lost my trust and assurance with their descriptions on the box. If I fancy some horse recipes at some point, I would rather buy the product clearly labelled "horsemeat","minced horse" or "chunks of horse".
