I get PMI as a benefit at work, I'd hate to be ill and have to wait upwards of 3 months to find out what's wrong. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I'd actually be happier if some more of the population would see sense. And no, my opinions wouldn't change as I approach retirement. I would prefer to give my children and grandchildren an equal chance to me than rob them of this nations competitiveness actually.0

Some are arguing that money spent on the NHS is wasteful.
My point is simply that whatever model you adopt for funding healthcare in UK it will cost the population something. How much would we collectively spend on insurance if we did not have the NHS. Would the average person pay more than the average US citizen or less? More than the average German or less?
We wouldn't. Life expectancy would drop. It doesn't make sense giving someone with only a few more years life expectancy treatments that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds when that cash is desperately needed in other areas of public expenditure.0 -

It is useful to have for ellective stuff.
Where do you think the majority of consultants come from? Where do you think they typically work for the majority of their time?
But if you are really ill I would be surprised if they will touch you. It will be the NHS that will pick up the the responsibility the private cover may help with some of the ancilliary stuff. Likewise if you need A&E they won't be sending theambulance.
If you are critical the NHS is where I would choose to be. Probably where the consultants would prefer you to be too for the depth of backup."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

We all want to give our children chances but as you get older I would be surprised if your views don't soften."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

You just pay £100 and and suddenly they have time to check you out straight away

The NHS was never designed to provide heart treatments to 80 year olds, yet that is what happens.
.
The NHS was never designed to to do lots of things it currently does and I agree that difficult choices need to be made in treating everyone and that this ought to be based on some kind of cost-benefit analysis. But the idea that this decision should be based purely on age is absurd.
You are perfectly entitled to argue that it should be but I for one do not need to support such an argument and I doubt that you will when you get older. I do not see why someone of 70 in generally good health should be denied treatment arbitrarily. Equally I do not want my like prolonged by medical treatment that gives me little quality of life afterwards.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

You may feel that in all modesty you can speak for everyone under 65, but I think that most people who pay for heathcare expect to be treated in a fair manner based on the likely quality of life that can be achieved from the treatment (a decision that inevitably must consider the cost and benefit of the treatment).
I still make the point that if we as a nation pay 8% of GDP in private health insurance and public taxes for the NHS, if we abolished teh NHS we would need to spend more than 8% of GDP on private insurance to get the same outcome. You say tritely "we wouldn't" true, as in the US those who could afford it would pay (more than they do now) to receive an expensive service, but a large propoortion would not be able to afford it.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0
