Hi, I wonder if anyone can help - I'm looking to get a phone for my son. It should be one where he can't run up lots of bills (sim only?) but also one where he can get access to downloading apps etc and go onto youtube.
Any ideas please clever people?

The cheapest Android smartphones cost far less than £50:
Half decent Android phone for £19.95 on PAYG; no topup required
'Droid On A Budget! Alcatel OT-983 1GHz Android PAYG Phone, £39.99 At O2 Shop
A very decent one costs about £100: Phone Choice Advice - G300 or Ace 2
A sim-only contracts with a reasonable mobile internet allowance start from about £7 p.m. To avoid high bills check giffgaff (PAYG), Tesco Mobile (capped contracts) and T-mobile (You Fix contracts).0 -
How about the Desire C with Tesco mobile? You can cap it at £10-a-month, which includes 500 mins, 5000 texts and 500MB data:

£10 Topcashback or Quidco too.0 -
He can still run up unlimited bills with a SIM-only contract though, no different to a contract with handset.
To avoid that, you either want a PAYG deal, or a contract deal with a cap in place. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Any PAYG tariff and android smartphone will do.
I'm currently very happy with my recent acquisitions - a Giffgaff sim card and a Huawei android. The phone cost me 25 quid and I've topped up once this month with 10 pounds and won't need to add anything further till next month.0
